Pasadena Humane Society to open expanded shelter Jan. 9

There’s a new animal welfare standard in town –– the Pasadena Humane Society’s Animal Care Center. The advanced center includes a new Wellness Clinic housing a high-volume spay/neuter clinic, a larger behavior and training center, dog daycare and boarding, the Shelter Shop – a larger onsite pet store; and ample underground parking. The new facility, which is an addition to the Pasadena Humane Society’s existing campus, opens January 9 at 9 a.m.

The goal of this expansion is to keep pets in homes and out of shelters. TheAnimal Care Center features:

• An expanded affordable spay/neuter clinic open Tuesday through Saturday; allowing PHS veterinarians to perform 20 spay/neuter surgeries on dogs, cats and rabbits per day.
• An affordable vaccination and microchip clinic held on Wednesdays and Saturdays.
• Dog daycare, which will be available in February.
• A new Education and Training Center that will hold a series of seminars and training classes.
• A new dog boarding facility.
• The Shelter Shop, an expanded on-site pet store with a variety of food, accessories, clothing and more for pets. All proceeds from retail sales go back to shelter programs.  
• Ample on-site underground parking for customers.

Lost dogs: Loca and Scurry

I found this dog wondering around.  She is a Brindle English Bull Terrier, very sweet, about 6 ish years old.  She seems to be an indoor dog responses well to people and is house trained. She desperately wants to go home.

Missing parrot: "Paris"

This is far afield from our usual area of coverage, but this pet can fly, so maybe someone can help:

My green cheeked Amazon parrot flew away on November 19. His name is Paris, and he is very friendly. He speaks Spanish. He is green with a red head. He has an injured right foot. He is trained to a step up command, but due to his injury, he will gently use his beak to pull himself onto your finger.

He was last seen hanging around Oakland Street between Del Mar and California. He loves Almonds and Walnuts.

Altadena is dogtown I: Catching up with Rudy, who's still looking for a home

Rudy the rescued pooch is well-cared for, but still looking for a place to call his own.

There's been so much dog activity this week, we thought we'd catch up with the saga of Rudy.

We told the story of the the seven-year-old pitbull/Rhodesian ridgeback mix last spring and summer.  Rudy was an emaciated, worm-ridden sad sack dumped in the Chaney Trail neighborhood in May. Concerned neighbors managed to round him up and found he was loving and had a great personality.  He was reluctantly sent to the county's animal shelter at Baldwin Park, but with full confidence that such a handsome lad would be adopted out soon.

But that was not to be -- he was slated to be put down.  They bargained a few more days of life for him, and the combined action of two Altadena Bonnies -- Bonny Shumaker of the rescue group On Wings of Care, and Bonnie Barron, bailed him out in time.

Barron, who already has enough dogs at home, arranged for him to get medical care, neutering, and kenneled him.  Some of the expense comes out of her own pocket, and some of it comes from contributions to On Wings of Care.  In August, they were still looking for him to be fostered or adopted.

And that hasn't changed. Bonnie Shumaker says that Rudy continues to be in a cage-free kennel, and Bonnie Barron still takes him out every day.  He's gotten close to adoption, but they've always pulled out at the end.  Bonnie Barron writes;

 I've attached Rudy's latest flyer. He does great with kids as you can see from the photos from Altadena's Farmer's Market (we frequent every Wed.). He now weighs a healthy 75 lbs & just got a complete check-up with lab/urinalysis w/ bladder scan & everything came out perfect!  I usually take him to my backyard in the evening to romp around for an hour or two which he enjoys. He gets his routine massage (focus to hips) every night on his memory foam twin mattress before bed in a  small bedroom size private room with fan, radio, toys, water, etc. ... I plan to start going out to west side for rescue/adoption events since people there appear to be more amenable to Pit mixes.

Altadena is dogtown II: The tale of the terriers continues

Yes, there's yet more in the saga of the terriers.

 

This week, five terriers who may be members of the same family were captured.  One of a trio in the Chaney Trail neighborhood was captured almost immediately by Lori Paul and Rob Staehle.  The other two were rounded up after many efforts by the neighbors there.  Two more were rounded up near the intersection of Lake Avenue and Washington Boulevard. Speculation is that it is a mom dog and her four offspring who were dumped at Hahamongna Park, where some were spotted earlier in the week.   

(Our earlier story is here, along with the urging of the Pasadena Humane Society to stop taking Altadena dogs over there).

The first dog -- now named Milly -- has been adopted, and the rest should be ready to be placed in new homes by this weekend.

UPDATE:  Apparently Milly was named Tina by her new owner, so we'll go with that.  Either way, a good ending.

 

 

 

Pasadena Humane Society admonishes Altadenans after wave of "doggie dumping"

OK, follow this story:

Last week, three cairn terrier mixes were found wandering in the Chaney Trail neighborhood.  One of them, a youngster, was captured almost immediately and taken to the Pasadena Humane Society, where she has since been adopted.  The other two, which included an older female,  were a little more wary, but after several days of concentrated effort, they were captured and are now looking to be fostered or adopted. Speculation is that the this was a mom dog and her two offspring.

But: Lori Paul (who with her husband Rob Stahle caught the first dog) writes to the newsgroups that two more terriers -- of similar color and markings as the others  -- were found on Lake Avenue near Washington Boulevard.  These two are currently in custody at the Pasadena Humane Society.

Since sightings of brown terriers have been reported at Hahamongna Watershed Park, Millard Canyon, and the Cobb Estate, speculation is that somebody dumped a mom dog and her four offspring, possibly at different trailheads.  (It's not too far fetched to think that dogs could make it from the mountains to Lake/Washington -- after all, a 12 point buck made it down from the Cobb Estate to Eliot Middle School on Oct. 1).  

In the midst of this rash of doggie dumping, Zahra Nealy, community relations associate at the Pasadena Humane Society & SPCA, wrote to Altadenablog saying -- politely -- that you shouldn't bring lost Altadena animals there:

Reuniting animals with their lost owners is something staff at the Pasadena Humane Society loves to see. PHS provides shelter for the cities of Arcadia, Glendale, La Cañada Flintridge, Pasadena, San Marino, Sierra Madre and South Pasadena. If you find a lost animal outside our service area, please bring them to the appropriate shelter so that their owners have the best chance to find their pets. Each city has an animal shelter for its lost pets—please use the right shelter so that more pets are reunited with their families.

Despite what Nealy says, Altadena doesn't have its own shelter -- Altadena's designated animal shelter is run by Los Angeles County at Baldwin Park.  It's an open secret that people who find dogs in Altadena will frequently fudge the place where they were found so the animals will be taken in by Pasadena's closer (and, some think superior) shelter, as opposed to the county lockup in far-away Baldwin Park.  But you're not supposed to do that, and the Pasadena Humane Society doesn't have to take them.

Two dogs found, now at Pasadena Humane Society

My husband and I found a pair of dogs running loose this morning in Altadena. One appears to be a male, tri-color mix, possibly part Akita, the other is a female, possibly lab mix. Both very friendly. The male was wearing a collar but had no tags, the female did not have a collar. We took them to the Pasadena Humane Society who scanned them and found microchips. Hopefully they'll be able to track down the owners, but we wanted to post here as well just in case....The female is called Nala. Pictures attached.

Update on terrier trio at Chaney Trail: one adopted, two still at large

"Toto" has found a home, but her two siblings are still at large.

The three wandering terriers found in the Chaney Trail neighborhood and reported yesterday are the focus of a concentrated effort by the neighbors to capture them and find them homes.

The three dogs -- which may be related -- were found wandering together in the area.  One of them was taken in by Lori Paul and Rob Stahle, who took it to the Pasadena Humane Society, while the other two fled.  According to Paul's latest email, "Toto" has been adopted and will be placed in a loving home tonight.

The other two are still at large and have been seen by several residents -- they are just hard to catch, and seem to be hanging around Nuccio's Nursery.

Millard Canyon resident and founder of "On Wings of Care" Bonny Schumaker has said that she can have them placed once they are captured.  She is available by email at bonny@OnWingsOfCare.org or 626-383-1412 (mobile & text).  According to Paul, Schumaker is "flying home from New Orleans (where she has been assisting research in the Gulf as a pilot), but will remotely coordinate placement of the two remaining terriers as soon as they are in custody. She will be able to help in person when she arrives here."

One of three dogs rescued: is the forest becoming an animal dumping ground?

.... may be, according to this message from Lori Paul:

Rob and I returned home late last night and saw not one, but three obviously related little tan cairn-type terrier dogs wandering in confusion down the hill near the trail junction... in coyote country. It was obvious that the little dogs were frightened and lost. We pulled aside, got out and tried to coax them over, but they were too skittish, except one. She hesitated and literally sat down in the middle of the road, trembling. We had to slow a car and truck coming up the hill so they wouldn't hit her. After about 10 minutes of edging closer to the little dog, I was able to touch her and then slide an old leash (that I keep in our glove box) over her head. She looked up with such a mournful expression, that I knelt down, petted her for a minute to reassure her, then picked her right up. She's a very gentle and endearing dog.

All we could do for her apparent siblings was to herd them downhill when they wanted to scatter and bolt back into Angeles Forest where the risk of encountering predators is greatest. The two of them were last seen traveling westward, somewhat together, on Loma Alta.

Once in the car, the little terrier settled in my lap and leaned against me with desperate relief. She shook for a few minutes, but exhaustion won out and she put her tired head down and rested. We drove down to Pasadena Humane Society where the after hours staff, Officer Murphy, took her in. He appeared charmed by the little dog. He promised clean water, some good food and safety.


All three dogs appeared dirty with scruffy coats and long term crusty stains under their eyes. The one we captured was not starved, but thin. She appears to be young. No collar and no microchip, according to Officer Murphy.  Her impound # is A340800:

This is a very sweet, reddish-tan little rough-coat terrier. She appears to be a Cairn Terrier mix, with longer legs than purebred as well as cute, half-flopped over triangular ears.

If you can give this lost waif a home when she comes up for adoption (we doubt that a responsible owner is out there!), please go see her and consider bailing her out. She is a very sweet dog who could fit well into your home and heart.

If any of you see her "siblings" running about, please try to capture them and reunite them with the dog we found by taking them to Pasadena Humane Society. One of the three dogs was lighter colored and smaller, almost like a rough-coated chihuahua. None of the dogs topped 20 lbs. in weight.

P.S. We hope our neighborhood and vicinity is not becoming a dumping ground for dogs, cats (like the mother cat and kittens Croix and others rescued) and even rabbits, but we fear this is the case. If you see anyone dumping an animal, please try to get description and driver's license. It is against the law to dump any animal, but it is particularly cruel and inexcusable to do so in the National Forest (currently closed to visitors) where there are so many large predators.

County animal control receives evac/transportation trailers

The County of Los Angeles Department of Animal Care and Control (DACC) has recently received four animal evacuation/transportation trailers.  The trailers were donated on behalf of the Animal Care Foundation (ACF), made possible by a life insurance bequest. The ACF earmarked the bequest, along with additional funds in order to purchase these trailers.  

These new trailers will greatly enhance the Department’s ability to shelter evacuated animals and transport dogs and cats in a variety of scenarios. These situations include emergency evacuation, off-site adoption events, and spay/neuter programs.  Each trailer is capable of transporting approximately 30 - 45 animals. Two trailers are 24 feet in length and each has a multi-purpose room that can be used for veterinary exams, adoption introductions, vaccine and microchip clinics, or other activities. The remaining two trailers are 16 feet in length and provide additional animal housing. All of the trailers are heated and air conditioned, providing the animals with safe, temperature controlled environments during weather extremes. The trailers are powered with solar panels and generators and can stand alone as temporary shelter during emergencies, providing the ability to co-locate pets alongside their owners at evacuation centers.  This will provide greater peace of mind to owners, as well as reduce the stress level of the animals during emergencies.

I found a large friendly cinnamon husky with golden eyes named Koda wandering in front of St. Elizabeth's school on Woodbury near Lake at around 5:45 am today (Monday).  Collar with tag/cell phone number, but no answer and I've not had any success getting a name and address from the number. I'll take him to the Pasadena Humane Society later this morning.

Lost dog: "Two Chains," Casitas/Altadena Drive

We lost a 10 month old unaltered male pitbull named Two Chains.  He is very sweet and friendly.  He is mostly gray with white on his face, neck and chest.

He was last seen on Monday Sept 9, 2013 at night near the corner of Casitas and Altdedena Drive.  He needs medication and his sister doggie is missing him very much.  He had two light-weight chain collars.

Lost dog: Daisy [UPDATE: Found by a reader]

Daisy went missing sometime last night or this morning.  

She is described as an all white-huskey. with one bluish eye and one brown eye and a pink collar.  She's very playful and won' t bite.

UPDATE:  The owners e-mailed that Daisy was spotted by an Altadenablog reader, and she's home safe now. 

Found dog on Mendocino, now at Pasadena Humane Society

A reader sent this picture of a friendly pit she found on Mendocino Street going from Glenrose to Fair Oaks -- which must be in Pasadena since she took it to the Pasadena Humane Society (*cough*).  This girl just hopped in her car and stayed there.

According to our correspondent, PHS said she had no chip, but she must have someone who misses her.  Call the Humane Society for more information: call 626-792-7151, ID # A338489.

Missing cat: Noel, and a request for information

The Stones are missing their cat, but also confess that they're not holding out much hope to find her.

Noel is a blackish tortoiseshell older female cat, last seen in their front yard at Calavaras/Midwick and Allen Avenue. Has a distinctive throaty meow and only four teeth left.

And, they say:

Also, we would love to hear comments from residents who may have lost pets to coyotes in the past.  Has anyone actually witnessed a coyote snatch a small animal and run off with it?  We are so curious because we have no physical evidence whatsoever; no fur, paw prints, or any signs of a struggle. Neither did we hear anything.  It was between 6:00 and 7:00 A.M. on Friday morning, September 6 that Noel disappeared from our front yard.  

Any comments or info on the act of pet snatching by coyotes would be greatly appreciated.

Missing dog: Coco, may be on a trail [UPDATE: Found!]

Trail Users & Neighbors,

Coco is a small, female, terrier-type dog with collar and tags (unless they've fallen off or been removed) who apparently got out of a car and away from her owner near Farnsworth Park late afternoon today. She could be anywhere in the vicinity of that park (hopefully not in Cobb Estate, but possible... if she followed a dog walker or crossed Lake Avenue).

Coco is from out of the area, but stays from time to time at Bonny Schumaker's cabin up in Millard Canyon, so the little dog might walk up Chaney Trail. Or, Coco may try to make her way back by walking along Loma Alta or via the Altadena Crest Trail from the top of Lake Avenue, traveling westward past the top of Devonwood Rd, crossing a trailhead at the N. end of Canon Blvd. (a culdesac), or following the trail to where it ends in the Skylane Drive barn area.

Please share this info. with neighbors and hikers. Coco is small and dark, which is worrisome re: her safety on the road at night in traffic. Coyotes are another concern. Coco is friendly to both people and dogs, but may be frightened and skittish. 

Call anytime! We need to get this little dog home safely. She is not wise re: wildlife and her life is in danger.

Found: Rooster, who needs a good home

 

Hello Altadenans,

This handsome young rooster was found last week in Eaton Canyon with an older rooster pal (who is still at large.) Since it happens from time to time, we're assuming the birds were dumped there.

Can anyone provide this beautiful bird with a good home? He's extremely friendly and completely at ease with my two cats. Happily roams my yard looking for bugs. I'd love to find him a new home by the end of this week.

We've had a peacock tragedy on Maiden Lane. Looks like mama and one chick were hit by a car, but two chicks are left. They are much too young to make it on their own. Who will give Rudy's story his happy ending?

The rescued mutt from Chaney Trail is a testimony to the power of love and neighbors -- but three months later, he still needs a home.

At the vet shortly after rescue, Rudy was emaciated and scared.

Rudy is not just any dog -- his story is an epic, but it needs a happy ending.

 

Rudy had been wandering in the Chaney Trail neighborhood for at least a week in May before he was taken in. A big dog, he was emaciated at 65 pounds, worm-ridden, and unneutered, but had lots of personality and loved people.  With a torn ear and a few scars, specuation was that he was a “bait dog,” used to train illegal fighting dogs. The red pitbull/Rhodesian ridgeback mix, despite his obvious rough handling, was people-friendly and loving.  Somewhere he acquired the name Rudy, and made some friends in the neighborhood -- but since Chaney Trail denizens tend to be dog lovers and have all the dogs they can handle, no one had room to take him in.  He went to the Baldwin Park animal shelter, but his fans were secure that such a charmer would be adopted soon.

But that was not to be. Rudy was estimated to be seven years old, but he acquired kennel cough and an upper respiratory tract infecton in the shelter.  No owner stepped forward, and nobody wanted to adopt an emaciated, coughing, seven year old dog.  His time ran out, and he was scheduled to be put down.

But Rudy ended up being a lucky dog.  Concerned neighborrs managed to bargain a few more days of life for the dog while they looked for an alternative. It took two Altadena Bonnies to get him out of the shelter: Bonnie Barron, an Altadena resident who worked with Bonny Schumaker with the rescue organization On Wings of Care to get the dog out.

 

With medical care, love, and three squares a day, Rudy is a handsome boy now.

At her own expense, Barron took Rudy to a veterinarian where he got a bath, ear-cleaning, shots and treatment, and was neutered.  Contributions for Rudy through On Wings of Care helped pay for some of his bills, but the brunt of them are being borne by Barron.

Found: Birmingham Roller pigeon in Altadena [Home now!]

Joy found a pigeon:

Found July 20th in the evening a "Birmingham Roller" Pigeon.   Its  blue tag says NBRC  13  M 0550.

UPDATE:  The club located the owner, who is Joy's neighbor, and bird is happily at home now.

Two cats in need of good home(s)

A neighbor on Athens Street died after a very long and brave (and to most of us, unknown) battle with cancer.  Lori would disappear for a week or more at a time, and tell me she had been to a college reunion out east. Gosh, I thought, that school sure has a lot of reunions. The truth, which I found out later, she was in the hospital undergoing extensive surgeries.

Aside for her courage, among Lori’s many virtues was growing beautiful roses simply to give her neighbors pleasure (she herself was allergic), and adopting rescue cats. She never had more than two or three, and at the time of her death, she had two. They need a home. Lori was an excellent neighbor and loved by all who knew her, and I’d like to think her cats have a happy ending.

The cats are young, but not too young, well behaved, ever so pretty, and from a very loving home.

Found dog, Washington/Chester

Found a dog near the border:

We found this female dog on Tuesday, July 9 near Washington and Chester. I know this is below  Altadena, however she might have run pretty far due to all of the 4th of July fireworks. This sweet dog is well trained and obviously belongs to SOMEBODY!

Devore dogs need rescue

Approximately 130 dogs that were rescued from a hoarder several weeks ago are now looking for rescue again.

The dogs  were seized by San Bernardino Animal Control officials on June 18 from Rainbow's End Animal Sanctuary.  According to news reports, the dogs have been living for years in one large pack without human interaction or proper food and medical care.

Animal lovers pitched in to have the dogs all adopted by the Devore Animal Shelter, which needs to disperse them quickly.  Because of the extensive behavior work and medical care they need, they are only being released to authorized rescue groups, which may only be able to take one or two of them.  Rescue groups must also take care of transporting the animals.

Schumaker, whose organization On Wings of Care is an authorized rescue group, had put out a call to any other rescue organization that is willing to take in and rehab any dogs.
