Forest Service extends Station Fire closure area for another year

The National Forest Service has extended the closure of the Station Fire Recovery Area for another year.

According to an order signed May 24 by Angeles National Forest supervisor Thomas A. Contreras,  the service prohibits being in the Station Fire Recovery Area or any roads or trails within it, except for the Hidden Springs Day Use Area and Monte Cristo Campground.  

What this means locally is that popular hiking and camping areas around Millard Canyon, Mt. Lowe, and Gould Mesa remain off-limits for at least another year.

La Canada Flintridge Country Club sues Forest Service for Station Fire damage

The La Cañada Flintridge Country Club filed a lawsuit Monday claiming the U.S. Forest Service caused nearly $50,000 in damage to its grounds while fighting the August 2009 Station fire.

Firefighting helicopters responding to the blaze drained golf course ponds, damaging irrigation pumps, using thousands of gallons of water billed to the club and scattering sand, tree branches and other debris, according to club President Randy Dreyfuss.

The club filed suit in federal court after the Forest Service denied a 2009 administrative claim in November, said club attorney Burton Mark Senkfor.
