Patricio da Silva of Altadena has won the second annual International Barto Prize for his composition, "Three Movements for PIano." The $5,000 biennial prize is for works written for solo piano and based on a poem. Da Silva, a native of Portugal, based his piece on a work of Fernando Pessoa, Portugal's greatest poet.
The work was performed by Tzimon Barto at two concerts over the weekend at Eustis, Fla.
Says Barto:
"It is very kinetic," Barto said. "It's a brilliant piece. The first and third movements are extremely energetic, very sophisticated. The second movement is very beautiful, like a cloud of harmonies."
