Colyn Fischer is an American violinist and composer who has played the
violin since the age of three and has been involved in Scottish fiddling
since he was five. As a teenager, he studied with a number of Scotland's
great fiddle masters including Ian Powrie, Angus Grant, and Alasdair Hardy,
and in the US with John Turner and Bonnie Rideout.
In 1993, Fischer came first in the junior division of the National Scottish
Fiddling championship. Twelve years later, he was the US-Scottish Open
Fiddle Champion, having won the nationwide competition at the Houston
Highland Games. He took the title again in May 2006, winning his second
National Scottish Fiddling championship in Ohio.
He holds a Bachelor of Music Performance in Violin from Wheaton College,
Illinois, and has performed, composed and recorded with various ensembles
and genres from rock to jazz to classical and Celtic.
A native of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Fischer has lived in California, since
2006, teaching music in the Silver Valley Unified School District. He also
teaches at the annual Jink and Diddle School of Scottish Fiddling in Valle
Crucis, North Carolina.
Thirty-two years ago, classically trained pianist Shauna Pickett-Gordon
first discovered the delights of Scottish traditional music, thanks to her
late husband, fiddler Colin Gordon. The pair founded two fiddle orchestras:
the Scottish Fiddlers of Los Angeles (still going strong after 26 years, now
under Jan Tappan's direction) and the Peninsula Scottish Fiddlers (part of
the San Francisco Bay area's music scene since 1990). Shauna has
accompanied many well-known Scottish fiddlers, among them Alasdair Fraser,
John Turner, Laura Risk, Calum MacKinnon, Bonnie Rideout, and John Taylor.
Collaborating now with Colyn Fischer gives her even more reason to write new
tunes in the Scottish style -- an homage to the great Scottish fiddlers and
their timeless music.

Colyn and Shauna are currently producing their first duo CD of their own
music.
