Altadena Foothlls Conservancy has planned a brush clearance along Chaney Trail on May 3. Sounds like a vigorous spring activity that will help our foothils, too. The announcement:
Dear Neighbors & Friends
We're doing it early this year...clearing the flammable brush off
the Altadena Foothills Conservancy land along Chaney Trail that many
of you helped purchase. Growth has been modest, and progress from
prior years has made the job easier, but we still need all your help
to make the job go fast, and our neighborhood even safer. Please contribute a couple of hours of your time to help clear brush
off AFC's land. Refreshments will be served, and you'll meet new
people who also care about our land.We need your help Saturday, May 3, doing County-mandated brush
clearance near the road and the two houses opposite the land
preserved by Altadena Foothills Conservancy on the west side of
Chaney Trail. The Altadena Crest Trail crosses the NW portion of this
triangular parcel.Start time is 8:00 AM; however, you can come later, if need be.
Meet on Chaney Trail just above the intersection at Alzada Road and
above the Chaney Trail Gate. You'll see me there, or down on the
slope below. Please come for an hour, or more if you can. The
earlier we start, the cooler it is. We plan to quit by noon, but you
can leave earlier if you need to. Many hands make for light work!I
f we have some extra of you folks, we'll assign a detachment to
reducing fuel load (mustard) along the ACT to the west of Chaney Trail. Many of the oak trees that we and the birds planted in prior years
are growing; a few were lost. Thanks to Tim Callahan for providing
and helping to plant several oaks about two months ago. Our plan to
re-vegetate with plants that will reduce future fire hazard is off to
a good start. A very few poppies are there, also. The oaks and
poppies assist in reducing the growth of foreign grasses and weeds,
which in turn reduces fire danger in the future. Restoration of the
habitat continues.AFC’s octogenarian Board member, Heinz Ellersieck, comes from Rubio
Canyon where he has five acres of his own to clear, so surely we in
the neighborhood and those who use the trail can spend a little of
our own time reducing fire danger here. We are also expecting some
help from The Neighborhood Church of Pasadena, and from the Los-
Angeles-wide "Big Sunday" volunteer drive, which this year is
operating on Sunday and Saturday. They have two Altadena projects
for the first time in their ten-year history. Let's show the folks
coming from out of Altadena that we have good neighborhood spirit
here on the edge of the foothills!Wear sturdy shoes for work on the slope. Long pants, long sleeves,
garden gloves highly recommended, and a hat if its sunny. Bring your
own tools, or I’ll have some extra: e.g., loppers, clippers, saw.If you would prefer not to work, but can make a contribution to cover
brush haulage or the Conservancy’s land stewardship, that would be
most welcome! Thanks to those who've already made a contribution!
