Joe Hopkins of Pasadena Journal is spearheading a conference of the West Coast Black Publishers Assn., and send us this missive, after the jump:
Ms. Clayton understands the power of the press and the relationships between communities, corporations and the Black press. She was the first African American woman to host a television show in the South. She was married to former Jet Magazine editor, Ed Clayton, and she was the Vice President to President and founder of CNN television, Ted Turner. In all of her work she has fought to bring about racial equality by exposing the accomplishments of African Americans and educating the public through the media.
Her accomplishments are numerous including the founding of the International Civil Rights Walk of Fame in Atlanta, Georgia. To create the walk of fame she collected the shoes of Civil Rights Leaders, past and present, and had their footprints imprinted near the King Memorial in
Atlanta. The Walk of Fame has become a major attraction in Atlanta. With the help of corporate sponsors the Walk of Fame now includes a mobile display of shoes of the likes of Dr. Martin Luther King and other warriors in the struggle for Human and Civil Rights.
Ms. Clayton will be the keynote speaker at the Conference Banquet to be held at 7:00 P.M. at the Pasadena Hilton on October 10, 2008. Tickets are $50 per person.
The Conference runs from October 9 through 11, 2008 and will open with a Brunch at the Tournament House on October 9, and end with Youth Day at the Hilton on October 11th.
The 3-day event will also honor Black Achievements in Pasadena including the three Black churches who have served the Pasadena community for over 100 years. The organization will also recognize the accomplishments of Pasadena’s Black pioneers, such as the Robinson brothers, Jackie and Mack, on a Tour of Black Pasadena to be held on October 9, 2008.
