Via Boing Boing, today there's a reading in San Francisco to benefit the Octavia Butler Scholarship Fund. Butler, from Altadena, was a masterful writer in a genre where there are few women or African Americans, science fiction, and a recipient of a MacArthur Foundation genius grant. She died in 2006.
