Bill Bing, Director of Bands at Caltech, and a long time resident of Altadena, tells us about an upcoming free concert at Caltech on Fri., Nov. 13, at 8 PM at Ramo Auditorium:
In 2008, The Caltech-Occidental Concert Band performed in Carnegie Hall. This will be the first time the public has had an opportunity to view the video of the band’s performance in that historic venue.
The second half of the program will feature the band in a new work by Pasadena resident Frank Ticheli, “Angels in the Architecture”.Also featured on the second half will be a composition by Dr. Leslie Deutsch. Dr. Deutsch is one of those rare individuals who is very accomplished on more than one instrument! Therefore, this composition, commissioned by the concert band, will feature him on trumpet, tuba, piccolo, and alto saxophone, but not at the same time! In addition to being a fine composer and instrumentalist, Dr. Deutsch is Chief Engineer, Interplanetary Network and Information Systems at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory.
In addition to all of the above, the band’s regular guest conductor Paul Asimow, who is an Associate Professor of Geology and Geochemistry at Caltech, will conduct Richard Strauss’ magnificent composition “Allerseelen”.
