Young Artists Grades 7-12 Invited to Submit Work to Los Angeles Scholastic Art Awards

Pasadena, CA (December 21, 2009) – The Armory Center for the Arts in Pasadena has partnered with Ovation TV and The Alliance for Young Artists & Writers to present the Los Angeles Scholastic Art Awards, the regional art competition of the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards. The Awards are the largest source of scholarship funds for creative teens in the U.S., offering recognition, exhibition, publication and scholarship opportunities for outstanding students in creative fields.
Students from Los Angeles County in grades 7-12 are invited to submit
their best work in 17 art categories, including animation,
architecture, sculpture, fashion design, photography, digital art, and
video game design to the Armory by January 15, 2010.

After submission, the works are are evaluated by a panel of jurors comprised of local artists, educators and other art professionals. Works are evaluated on the time honored criteria of originality, technical skill and the emergence of a personal vision or voice. The award winners will be recognized during the Los Angeles Scholastic Art Awards Ceremony which will take place Saturday, February 27, 2010 and their work will be exhibited in The Armory from February 27th until March 14th.
For the first time, this year the Armory will partner with The Pasadena Weekly to provide a special award to a PUSD art student who shows exceptional promise and will provide mentoring, placement in art classes, and other prizes.
Various other prizes will be awarded to other regional Gold Key winners by the Armory and other arts organizations and businesses.
If a student receives a top prize (Gold Key Award) at the Los Angeles Scholastic Art Awards, then his or her work moves on to the national level where 15 high school seniors will be honored with a National Portfolio Gold medal, the highest level of achievement, and each will receive a $10,000 cash award. An additional $3.9 million in art and writing scholarships will be made available to Portfolio Gold and Portfolio Silver medal recipients through the Alliance. Award-winning artists also participate in exhibitions in New York City and around the nation and images of their work will be published in nationally distributed catalogs.
