Pasadena Playhouse may be dead (our prediction: it will return), but Theatre Americana is rising like a phoenix. The theater group, which has its roots in the WPA work of the Great Depression, went under in the year 2000, but is now coming back to life again at its old home turf, Davies Auditorium at Farnsworth Park. Janette Allen of PSN has a great feature on the theater's revival under the direction of co-presidents Donna Scarantino and Jim Hensley.
(We interviewed Scarantino for our own story, but the notes are locked in the dead computer that's in the shop! We've learned a lesson here!)
We won't retread PSN's story here, but we WILL remind you that Theatre Americana is offering a reception and staged reading on Feb. 13 of Scarantino's original play, Polterheist. More information and tickets are available at the Theatre Americana website. Proceeds go to the Farnsworth Park after-school program.

LA County's Altadena Connection, the community resource guide of local events and services, should have arrived in your mailbox and is available at the Community Center, library, senior center, and the usual places. (We have a pdf version here.) Particularly check out Page 11!
We've also been asked to include a survey (another pdf document here) so the county can know how to improve the publication and what you'd like to see.

The American Cancer Society invites individuals and families who want to celebrate the lives of those who have faced cancer, remember loved ones lost and fight back against the disease to join us at our Relay For Life of Altadena Kickoff on Sat., Jan. 30 at 2 PM at the Altadena Library, 600 E. Mariposa. In 1985, Relay For Life began with one man who walked and ran around a track for 24 hours raising $27,000. This year, Relay For Life is coming to you in more than 4,800 communities and in Altadena we are hoping to raise $30,000 to fight back against cancer.
Our Relay For Life event is taking place May 15th-16th 2010 at Loma Alta Park –so Save the Date!
The Relay For Life kickoff rally is where anyone families, caregivers, cancer survivors, schools, companies, etc., get together to kick off annual Relay For Life activities and find out how they can get involved.
The American Cancer Society Relay For Life is an overnight community celebration where individuals and teams camp out, dance, and take turns walking around a track relay style to raise funds to fight cancer. At nightfall, participants will light hundreds of luminaria around the track in a moving ceremony to honor cancer survivors as well as friends and family members lost to the disease. The American Cancer Society Relay For Life represents hope that those lost to cancer will never be forgotten, that those who face cancer will be supported, and that one day cancer will be eliminated.

We received this message from Elizabeth Nelson of the Christmas Tree Lane Assn:
Please come and join your neighbors and friends beginning February 13th from 9 AM to 12 PM for “Take Down”. As long as the weather permits, we will be taking the lights off the trees every Saturday and Sunday thereafter from 9 to 12 until all the trees are finished. In the morning you will be greeted with donuts, coffee and hot chocolate and after 12:00 lunch will be served.
We will be starting at the top of Christmas Tree Lane (Santa Rosa and Altadena Drive) and working our way down every weekend until finished.
Two things to know before you come:
1) If you are bringing a group of more than 5 on any weekend and plan to stay and have lunch, PLEASE call (626) 403-1123 or E-Mail us beforehand so that we will have enough food for everyone;
2) We can only move as fast as our tree climbers, so, if you would be willing to climb about one story up a ladder, please tell us when you come and we will show you what to do. (To get an idea of the height, go to any tree on the Lane, look up and see the metal box…that’s about how far up you’d need to go).
If you have any further questions about the specifics of screwing in bulbs and taking lines off the trees, give us a call.
Thank you and we hope to see you on the Lane!!

Donna Barnes-Roberts tell us:
I teach a series of watercolor classes at The Coffee Gallery in Altadena. My new Monday Afternoon Watercolor Class will begin February 22nd which goes for 8 weeks.I teach the nuts and bolts of watercolor. If you have had other watercolor teachers, I can almost guarantee that my classes will be really different. For one thing, I only take 6 students per class, so I can see what is happening with your work, and we discuss EVERYTHING about watercolor - art, composition, pretty much anything you like.

Did the trailcam catch a thief? Adonis WIlson sent this:
I am writing to you in anticipation that you will spread the word around and that this thief may be found...but at least that hikers be aware of the continual frustration in urban interface hiking:
I hiked in Rubio Canyon [Sunday] looking for a trailcam location. I left the camera & my pack (heavy) cabled to a tree and covered with leaves while I hiked farther up canyon. I took everything of value out of the pack, but forgot my Olympus point-and-shoot was in a small side pocket. Returned to find the pack moved, all zippers open, and realized later the camera was gone. I also noticed the tape over the motion sensor on the trailcam had been moved, and out of curiosity, checked to see what the cam captured.
--------
---------
Stupid me for forgetting about the camera - but what the hell??? This is not some punk kid, this is an adult....with reading glasses....hiking....
So please - if you recognize this person, who was in Rubio near the Pavilion today around 11am, LET ME KNOW.

Marcia Thompson’s reign as 2008-2010 Poet Laureate of the Altadena Library District is coming to a close and she is encouraging all poets in the Altadena community to submit their poems to the Altadena Library to be published in their next anthology.
Throughout Marcia’s reign she has had the privilege of sharing her poems with fellow poets on numerous occasions and learned the Altadena community is filled with very talented writers with wonderful stories to share.
Since the publishing of Marcia’s first poetic collection, The Wisdom in Your Wings: A Poetic Tribute to Dr. Maya Angelou and the theatrical adaptation that opened in 2008 at the William B. Davies Auditorium, her life hasn’t been the same. She is grateful to her community for receiving her talent. Her second poetic collection entitled, Mid-Life Revival will be released in April.
Marcia now plans to devote much of her time to her studies as she begins a doctoral program in Education and Media Studies. Marcia was recently asked to co-teach early childhood literacy at a junior college and plans to continue teaching and working with adult learners pursuing careers in child development and education.
Poets who live, work or are active in Altadena and would like to apply for Poet Laureate of the Altadena Library 2010-2012 may send sample poems, a Poet Laureate application, a biography, and contact information to Altadena Library District, Attention Poet Laureate Selection Committee by February 1. Those who would like to be a part of the Poetry & Cookies program and be included in the library's annual poetry publication may submit poems to pdutton@altadenalibrary.org by February 15. This year’s Poetry & Cookies celebration will take place on Saturday April 10 at 2 PM. The event will feature the crowning of the library's Poet Laureate for May 2010 through April 2012. More information and applications for Poet Laureate are available at the library, by calling 626-798-0833 and on the library’s website at www.altadenalibrary.org.

Just a reminder that if your local church, business, service club or other organization is doing a benefit for Haitian relief, let us know! Just in case you are in an evac zone, reader Steven Durham forwarded this message from the Pasadena Humane Society:
As you may recall, last September, friends like you made it possible for the Pasadena Humane Society & SPCA to provide food, shelter and care for nearly 400 animals evacuated from areas threatened by the Station Fire. Now, many of these same areas are in danger of mudslides and flash floods. Mandatory evacuations have been ordered for over 600 residences in the foothill communities and as the rain continues to pour down, this number will likely grow.
PHS is working with the County of Los Angeles to protect families and their defenseless animals from disaster. Evacuated residents can bring their pets to one of three off-site evacuation centers and be assured they will be safe: the Sierra Madre Recreation Center at 611 E. Sierra Madre Blvd., La Canada High School at 4463 Oak Grove Dr., or the Glendale Civic Center at 1401 Verdugo Rd. Animals brought in to these centers will then be transported to our shelter. We will be sure that they receive appropriate housing and care until evacuation orders are lifted and it is safe for them to return home. Residents may also bring their animals directly to the shelter if they prefer. All animals will be cared for at no cost to their owners.
Regular PHS shelter functions will remain closed throughout this emergency, but our dedicated staff will be standing by and available to help the community 24 hours a day. If you need assistance or have any questions, please call us at (626) 792-7151. We are happy to help.
In the meantime, let me say thank you for your support. It is your generous concern for animals that makes it possible for us to serve our community. We are very grateful to you.
Stay safe and dry.
Sincerely,
Steven R. McNall
President/CEO

Reader Pilar Aceves Goeders found somebody:
Elderly grey male terrier mix wandering around E Loma Alta Dr near Holly Slope.
Managed to corral him and he's currently safe and dry inside our garage. Please call 626.529.5464 to further id/claim.
But before we could get that notice up, she wrote again:
Well, normally my m.o. with a lost critter with no tags would be to call/get him to the local shelter/humane society, but they are apparently busy to the gills helping the people under evacuation orders with their pets at the moment.
So...looks as though I'll probably hold onto the old codger little terrier here for at least a few days until the weather dries out. In the meantime, I'll see if anyone calls/posts something looking for a dog matching his description. I'll let you know if/when he gets reunited with his family.

We were unable to get to the start of last night's joint meeting of the Altadena Town Council and the Pasadena Unified School District board, but Brian Charles of PSN has already filed the story we were going to do -- not a lot of support for a new parcel tax to make up declining school district revenues.
However, we stuck for the rest of the meeting, after the PUSD board and PSN went home:
