Altadena native and 1984 John Muir High School graduate David Stevenson has been on the receiving end of several prestigious awards for his work as a television newsman.
Stevenson and several colleagues from KTVU were honored at the recent Associated Press Television and Radio Association (APTRA) "58th Annual Mark Twain Awards Celebration Honoring Excellence" that took place at Disneyland’s Paradise Hotel.
They were awarded the prestigious "Bill Stout Memorial Award for Excellence" for their coverage of the 2009 shooting deaths of four Oakland police officers. Stevenson was also nominated for an individual award for his coverage controversial recall of Toyota trucks and SUVs. Earlier this month, Stevenson received a prestigious George A. Peabody Award for excellence in journalism for his reporting on a Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) officer’s shooting of an unarmed passenger. That highly charged case is currently being tried in Los Angeles courts.
Stevenson is a graduate of Boston University and he has had a distinguished and diverse career in television. He began his career in CNN's Los Angeles Bureau as a courier and also served as a field producer.
In 1990, he joined the staff of ABC News Atlanta Bureau, rising quickly to become a bureau producer. He he coordinated network coverage of breaking news events and produced news stories for World News Tonight, featuring the late Peter Jennings.His work has also involved on-site news coverage from such diverse countries as Israel, Sweden and Haiti and events including the Atlanta Olympics bombing and the notorious Susan Smith murder case in South Carolina .
Since relocating to the Oakland/San Francisco area in 1999, he has held positions with NewsNet Central and TechTV, where he reported on finance, technology and e-commerce trends before joining KTVU Channel 2 in 2005. David Stevenson is the son of Altadena residents Gene and Mary Ann Stevenson.
