This morning, other news organizations are saying -- unlike what we were told by the deputy -- last night's incident was an officer-involved shooting. We've got calls in to Lt. Sanchez and Capt. McLean to get to the bottom of it, and will share it as we get it.
UPDATE: Here's the press release on the incident:
Reader Steve Haussler says the area was still cordoned off at 7 AM.
Sheriff's Internal Affairs Bureau Investigators are en route to the 2800 Block of Santa Rosa Avenue, Altadena, to investigate the circumstances surrounding a Deputy-involved shooting.
No deputies were injured.
Whenever a deputy-involved shooting occurs involving Los Angeles County Sheriff's Deputies, multipleinvestigations immediately begin at the scene. These include separate investigations by the Sheriff's Internal Affairs Bureau as well as Sheriff's station or detective division investigators. Attorneys with the Los Angeles Office of Independent Review also respond to the scene, and have full access to the facts known to the Sheriff's Department throughout every phase of these thorough investigations. Once concluded, every aspect of the shooting is reviewed by the Sheriff's Executive Force Review Committee.
UPDATE 1:30: PSN has the full up-to-date press release in their story.
UPDATE 11:50 AM: Looks like the LA Times is on top of it: story seems to be the individual involved threatened suicide, shot at the deputies who fired back, but then shot himself and died at the scene. We're still trying to get some information from the local sheriffs and fill in the blanks.
