So which wine do you serve with hot dogs? Burgers? Ribs? The community is invited to find out at a free talk and tasting hosted by (Altadenablog sponsor) Webster’s Fine Stationers the evening of Sat., June 26, from 6- 8 PM at the store, located at 2450 Lake Avenue in Altadena, CA.Anne Louise Bannon and Michael Holland of OddBallGrape.com will show guests which wines match well with hamburgers, hot dogs, and even ribs with barbecue sauce. They will also offer great tips on how to find great wine at a reasonable price. Guests will also enjoy tasty snacks. RSVPs are required, as space is limited, and can be made by calling (626) 797-1135.
“Typically, the problem with wine and barbecue is that the sweet, sometimes spicy flavors of the sauces make more traditional wines like cabernet and chardonnay taste funny,” says Bannon. “But there are some wonderful wines that go really well with ribs and the like, and we think it’s time people found out about them.”
“We want Webster’s Fine Stationers to be an active part of our community,” says store owner Lori Webster. “Having a special event like this will bring people together to have a fun, relaxing time while learning something they may not have known before.”
Holland and Bannon—a husband and wife team—started their blog OddBallGrape.com because they felt there were a lot of wonderful small wineries and just as many great wine varieties that were not getting attention from the traditional wine press. Holland is a home winemaker and has served as a judge at multiple wine competitions, including the Orange County and Santa Barbara County fairs. Bannon covered the wine industry for Wines & Vines Magazine and later wrote for WineMaker. They live in Altadena.
