Actor/environmentalist Ed Begley, Jr., will be the keynote speaker on Fri., June 25 at 10 AM, as High Point Academy will showcase its Composting Education Program. High Point Academy is located at 1720 Kinneloa Canyon Road, Pasadena.
In partnership with Waste Less Living, an Altadena-based zero-waste consulting and composting service provider, High Point Academy took its commitment to environmental stewardship to the next level by providing its students with education and training for
sustained waste reduction practices at the school – while highlighting that composting
makes a difference to the environment. Students were able to divert 76% of the waste stream from the landfill into compost during the 2009-2010 school year.
“As environmental issues become more pressing, there are two possible
responses:
forget it and hope that government and corporations will figure it out,
or take action
yourself,” said Begley. “I
commend High Point Academy for taking action and embracing the Waste Less Living program.”
“Inspiring, mentoring and educating students to improve the health and
quality of the
environment through sustainable lifestyle habits are part of our
mission,” said Christine
Lenches-Hinkel, president of Waste Less Living. “High Point Academy has
taken a bold step and can be considered a model for other schools to emulate. With
the support of Senator Carol Liu, we hope the program takes flight in the public
schools as well so that we can begin to divert even more waste from our
landfills at an accelerated rate. Waste diversion through composting is the ultimate in green house gas
reduction.”
High Point Academy students will showcase the success of the composting
program
by providing tours and highlighting key features of the program. For
