STRONG HIGH PRESSURE OVER THE DESERT SOUTHWEST WILL KEEP A HOT AIR MASS IN PLACE OVER THE REGION THROUGH THE WEEKEND. TEMPERATURES ACROSS THE INLAND AREAS WILL REMAIN WELL ABOVE SEASONAL NORMALS THROUGH SUNDAY...WITH NEAR RECORD LEVELS EXPECTED EACH AFTERNOON. PROJECTED INLAND AFTERNOON MAXIMUM TEMPERATURES WILL RANGE FROM THE MIDDLE TO UPPER 90S TO NEAR 110 DEGREES EACH AFTERNOON...WITH HEAT INDEX VALUES EXCEEDING 100 IN MOST INLAND AREAS. AREAS CLOSER TO THE COAST WILL BE MODERATED BY THE MARINE LAYER...WITH TEMPERATURES AT OR JUST ABOVE SEASONAL NORMALS FOR THIS TIME OF YEAR. MONSOONAL MOISTURE EMBEDDED IN THE SOUTHEAST FLOW ALOFT WILL CONTINUE TO BRING ISOLATED TO SCATTERED SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS ACROSS PORTIONS OF SOUTHWEST CALIFORNIA TODAY. SOME OF THESE THUNDERSTORMS COULD CONTAIN BRIEF HEAVY RAINFALL...DANGEROUS CLOUD-TO-GROUND LIGHTNING...AND GUSTY AND ERRATIC WINDS. THE COMBINATION OF HEAT AND INCREASED HUMIDITY...OR HEAT INDEX...WILL EXCEED CRITICAL LEVELS ACROSS PORTIONS OF THE MOUNTAINS AND VALLEYS OF LOS ANGELES AND VENTURA COUNTIES THROUGH SATURDAY. AN EXCESSIVE HEAT WARNING HAS BEEN ISSUED THROUGH SATURDAY EVENING FOR PORTIONS OF THE LOS ANGELES AND VENTURA COUNTY VALLEYS AND MOUNTAINS INCLUDING THE SANTA MONICA RANGE.
