One of those long Town Council meetings last night, despite nothing much going on.
- A great deal of discussion ensued following the report of Councilman Ken Roberts, who is also vice-chair of the PUSD school consolidation committee that recommended three Altadena schools for closure. After reeeeeeally extended discussion, chair Gino Sund will call PUSD Supt. Edwin Diaz to express the council’s displeasure with the decision.
- LA County Fire Department Asst. Chief Bill Niccum was introduced to the council. Niccum will be in charge of three battalions, including Battalion 4 which serves Altadena.
- Sheriff Capt. Steven McLean said that there were only eight burglaries in Altadena in September, down from the high of 35 burglaries a month.
- The council will send a courtesy letter to businesses in conjunction with the Altadena Chamber of Commerce, advising them that county code enforcement will be coming through. The Lake Ave. business area is in a community standards district, and the county will soon begin enforcing the rules on proper signage.
- UPDATE: (This didn't make it in earlier): Sund reported that five different companies submitted bids for a trash hauling contract. A point of difficulty is that the county is not sure whether to include Kinneloa Mesa into the contract -- so bidders had to prepare three bids: one for Altadena, one for Kinneloa Mesa, and one combined. An evaluation team has been assembled, recommendations will be made by the end of October, by mid-November a letter announcing the winners will be released, followed by a process of appeal, approvals of supervisors, time to gear up -- the target date for new trash service is by June 1, 2011
