Sgt. Marsha Williams of the Altadena Sheriff's station has given us more information on the rescue of the hikers in Eaton Canyon late Sunday afternoon:
Two Temple City men, age 21 and 22, were out hiking without backpacks, food, water, or particularly hike-worthy clothing, according to Williams. The 22-year-old fell from the path down the mountainside, close to the edge of a cliff, and hung on to brush to prevent falling further.
He called the Crescenta Valley sheriff's station on his cell phone, and they stayed there until the arrival of the Altadena Mountain Rescue Team (AMRT), which called in the sheriff's Air 5 chopper to pull them off the mountain. (We had a scanner report that the pair was taken to Huntington Memorial Hospital to be treated for injuries.)
Some of our readers said that the rescue had been going on all day, but we found out that the rescue team had (perhaps fortunately) actually spent the morning in helicopter training, per the AMRT website.
