for Altadenablog
In a heroic demonstration of Altadena's can-do spirit, over 200 shoppers and 25 vendors braved the worst rainstorm in decades to come out and shop at the Altadena Urban Farmers Market on Sunday.
Intrepid foodies and community boosters went home with Italian heirloom salad greens from Winnetka Farms, which are becoming locally famous for their lasting power (3 weeks plus, seriously!), jams made from Altadena's fruit trees, granola made with Zorthian Ranch honey, Marengo Street eggs, fresh-baked bread, homemade soap and even Altadena-grown sugar cane stalks (who knew?). The bravest of the brave stood around in the rain enjoying mugs of spicy lentils, warm empanadas, and delicate slices of carrot cake made with Altadena eggs.
The cook book swap ended early because it was impossible to keep the books dry, but that just means more books for January!
The Market raised $264 towards the incorporation of the Arroyo Time Bank as a non-profit.
The Altadena Urban Farmers Market takes place on the third Sunday of every month from 1pm-4pm at the Zane Grey Estate, rain or shine, and we mean that. Vendor application are available at www.arroyotimebank.org.
Gloria Putnam and her partner Steve Rudicel work with the Arroyo Time Bank to organize the Altadena Urban Farmers Market at the Zane Grey Estate, where they live.
