An unidentified man was shot and died at the scene after fleeing a traffic stop and pulling out a handgun during a fight with a sheriff's deputy, according to a statement from the Los Angeles Sheriff's Dept.
The incident occured at about 11:30 last night near the AM-PM on Lake Ave. and New York Dr., on the 900 block of East New York Drive.
According to the statement from the sheriff's department, "deputies conducted a traffic stop, and a male black adult exited from the passenger side of the vehicle and ran away. A brief foot pursuit ensued when the suspect turned and engaged one of the deputies. The suspect started fighting the deputy in an attempt to get away. During the fight, the suspect reached into his waistband and pulled out a handgun. The deputy, fearing for his life, shot one time killing the suspect."
The suspect was pronounced dead on the scene. The deputy was not injured. The statement says that the suspect's gun was recovered at the scene. As of Saturday morning, no other information is available.
UPDATE: The man killed in the shooting has been identified by the Los Angeles County Coroner's Office as Stephen Bullock, 33, of Pomona.
