Forewarned is forearmed, and public safety maven Carolyn Seitz has condensed information from several sources for the following:
The Los Angeles County Department of Public Works has released the following information and forecast for rainfall, mud & debris flows and flooding potential for the foothill areas through Monday, March 21.
RAINFALL FORECAST
5 to 9 inches of rainfall is being predicted for the foothill areas for LaCrescenta, LaCanada, Glendale, Altadena, Sierra Madre - all of the south facing foothill areas. In addition, the National Weather Service is predicting heavy snowfall in the mountain areas, high winds and the possibility of thunderstorms.
MUD & DEBRIS FLOWS & FLOODING
They are designating our area as in Phase 1, which means that there is a potential for mud & debris flows and flooding. In particular, this is the full information being provided for those areas designated as subject to Phase 1 conditions:
It is recommended that emergency response entities monitor the following areas for potential mudflow deposition on: Auburn Avenue east of Auburn Debris Basin; the development under construction north of Carter Avenue; Carter Avenue between the development and Mira Monte Avenue; Mt. Wilson Trail near Mira Monte Avenue; Churchill Road near Skyland Drive; Skyland Drive; streets below Sierra Madre Debris Dam (Sumac Trail, Brookside Lane, Woodland Drive); Yucca Trail; Lotus Lane, above Camillo Street and Sturtevant Debris Basin; Sunrise Hill Lane; Santa Anita Canyon Road above Lannan Debris Basin.
All of the debris basins have their full capacity currently available.
ROAD CLOSURES
No road closures have yet been announced. As has become normal during these storm events, it is likely that the Chaney Trail Gate will be closed and Millard Campground will be closed; Angeles Forest Highway, Angeles Crest Highway, and the mountain roads above us which have been closed during every storm event since the Station Fire will be closed.
Since the bridge on Canyon Crest is often subject to overflow or issues with debris and mudflows, we should all anticipate that and plan accordingly. Please exercise caution at or near the bridge. You may see crews from the Department of Public Works standing by if it turns out that the rainfall amounts are as currently anticipated.
PLEASE PLAN AHEAD AND STAY SAFE!
