A California Highway patrol officer was hospitalized with major injuries after a car smashed into his motorcycle and ejected him into the roadway Tuesday afternoon.
Officer J.D. Fields, 59, of the CHP station, was transported to Huntington Hospital with major injuries including a fractured left femur and fractured left wrist, according to a release from the highway patrol.
According to the release, Fields was traveling on the eastbound 134 to the northbound Highway 2 near Glendale in his patrol motorcycle when he saw a stopped vehicle blocking a lane. He activated his emergency lights and made a lane change and began slowing as he approached the stopped vehicle.
A Nissan driven by Celia Fitzgerald, 80, of Tujunga that was coming behind veered her vehicle into the next lane to avoid a collision and then came back into the lane for an unknown reason and struck the motorcycle, according to the release. The collision ejected the officer from his motorcycle and he landed on the roadway.
Fitzgerald was interviewed at the scene and released. The cause of the collision is still under investigation, according to the CHP.
