Altadena choreographer Kim Almanzar Mischook (known professionally as Kamala Almanzar) is presenting "A Choreographersʼ Collective: Authentic Middle Eastern Dance in an Intimate Setting" at Arte Flamenco Dance Theatre, 230 W. Main St, Alhambra, on Aug. 12, 13, and 14.
Almanzar says:
Known as “Belly Dance” in the western world, and perhaps thought of as an improvisational art that one might see in a restaurant or nightclub, the dance form as it exists today has expanded its reach to theaters and stages around the world. Choreographers do not only create from their imaginations, but draw on their studies of Middle Eastern dance and culture to connect their pieces to a larger picture. Hence, 'A Choreographers' Collective' will showcase dances with influences ranging from modern Cairo style Belly Dance, to Iraqi folk movements; from classic Egyptian films to Romani influenced dances. The audience will walk away with a new image and appreciation of Middle Eastern dance.
The choreographers come from a range of backgrounds, with their experience coloring their styles each in a unique way -- some worked as professional Belly Dancers in the Arab world and were trained by stars of Egyptian stage and screen, others were trained by or worked alongside the Oriental dance greats from the heyday of the American belly dance explosion in the 70's.
This show is recommended for all ages, and will be both entertaining and educational. American audience members will enjoy this journey into other cultures, and Middle Eastern audience members will be treated to authentic dance from their home countries. This is a very small venue and it is highly recommended to purchase tickets in advance.
