Local public schools and Pasadena City College could face a combined $9 million in budget cuts come January if state finances fail to improve over the next three months.
Cuts to K-12 schools in the area would likely result in districts draining reserves, sending out layoff notices and shortening the school year.
The budget Gov. Jerry Brown signed in June projected that the economy would improve as the year wore on, and that the state would receive $4 billion more than originally anticipated in tax revenues.
If those predictions fell $2 billion or more short, lawmakers agreed to make nearly $1.8 billion in cuts to K-12 budgets and reduce funding for community colleges by $72 million. Revenue came in nearly $540 million below projections in July, according to the state controller’s office.
