You can always read books in your pajamas -- but now you can check them out from the library, too!
Beginning Sept. 1, the Altadena Library will open up its new eBook colllection to browse, check out, and download books to your iPad, iPod Toch, iPhone, or an eReader such as the Sony Reader, or Barnes & Noble's Nook. Android and Blackberry devices will be able to work, and access for the Amazon Kindle will becoming soon (A complete list of devices that can be used is listed at http://overdrive.com/resources/drc/. )
Barbara Pearson, Library Director, said in a statement that, “After many requests, we are delighted to finally be able to offer eBooks to our public. The exponential growth of popularity is understandable since this media is so convenient, especially for people with smart phones and other such devices. Although the library only has the funds to purchase about 250 popular eBooks the first year, the collection will continue to grow and the library’s website will also offer access to over 2 million downloadable items from various free websites so browsers need never be bored.”
Laureen McCoy, Head of Adult Services who is in charge of ordering the eBooks, offers, “My thanks to the many people who filled out our online survey telling us which kinds of titles they would like us to buy. The big winners were popular fiction and mysteries so that’s where our emphasis will be along with some biographies and history books which also received a number of votes.”
Altadena Library’s eBook collection will be able to be accessed beginning Sept. 1 from a link on the library’s website at http://www.altadenalibrary.org/
