On Sun., Sept. 11, a group of community patriots will commemorate the ten-year anniversary of the worst terrorist attack on American soil with a memorial ceremony and the dedication of new signs along New York drive.
At 11 AM, many local groups, citizens and civic and community leaders will come together to honor the nearly 3,000 people who lost their lives on the attack on the World Trade Center in New York City. The unveiling will be held at the intersection of New York Drive and Bradley Street in Pasadena.
Led by the Pasadena 911 committee and local Air Force veteran John McDannel, event supporters include local service clubs, airline crews, veterans groups, businesses, schools and city, state and national representatives.
Since the 9-11 attacks, McDannel has worked tirelessly for the last decade towards a Pasadena memorial. “I couldn’t do anything to retaliate, so I planted trees,” said McDannel. Since then, he has solicited and received tree donations, and has personally planted 140 native oak trees along New York Drive. This beautiful effort now serves as a living memorial to the victims of 9-11. The temporary road signs noting New York Drive as a memorial to 9-11-01 victims will be placed along the boulevard’s green zones.
The ceremony will include special guests such as Rep. Adam Schiff (D-Pasadena), four USMC F-18's from Miramar flyover and the Pasadena City College – Tournament of Roses marching band. The ceremony will begin at 11 AM at 3100 New York Drive. The Tamkin Foundation donated $25,000 for the memorial signage and stone work. 480 Rose Parade grandstand style seats generously provided by Sharp Seating will accommodate visitors while parking for 1,500 cars is planned. An array of food trucks and refreshments are available on site.
“We are looking forward to an important kick-off to the permanent memorial to 9-11 in Pasadena,” said McDannel. “As an American, I think it’s important for all of us to never forget the bravery, human sacrifice and events of that fateful day. Fire fighters, police, EMTs, military in uniform, schools, Rotary members, civic clubs, veterans, and citizens are welcome to attend. Patriotism is alive and well in Pasadena.”
