Altadena Historical Society President Jane Brackman is giving us a little teaser of the historical society's tour of Mariposa next month:
We will be featuring the cottage of Altadena's first historian, Sarah Noble Ives on our East Mariposa Street history tour on Sun., Oct. 23, from 10 AM to 4 PM. Sarah was not only a noted author but also a landscape painter of some renown. Her history of Altadena was published by the Historical Society in 1938. Records indicate that we ordered 200 copies. They were printed by Vroman’s Publishing at a cost of 85 cents each. Today the rare book in good condition is worth well over $200. Two of her paintings are in the collection of the Altadena Library.
On Oct. 23, 2011, Sarah’s house, along with the grand craftsman home built by the Chamberlain family will be open for docent-led tours. In addition, the walking tour of Mariposa Street from Lake to Maiden Lane will include histories of the Neustadt/McClintock house (today in near original condition), a Greene and Greene designed cottage and the Markham mansion.
