A boot camp program operated by former Altadena town councilman Keith Gibbs on Pasadena public school grounds from 2007 to 2009 was shut down by school district officials due to complaints of “corporal punishment tactics” and an allegation of Gibbs’ sexual contact with a minor, according to Pasadena Unified School District documents.
In a Feb. 3, 2010 letter to Gibbs, then Pasadena Supt. Edwin Diaz refused to extend Gibbs’ permit to operate camps on the John Muir High School and Washington Middle School campuses. Diaz cited a Pasadena police investigation of sexual misconduct involving an underage female, parent and teacher complaints of harsh treatment of camp participants and Gibbs’ failure to pay $4,350 for his permit to operate on campus.
Diaz said Gibbs misled school officials and disrupted meetings while pressing the school board to renew his permit. He ordered Gibbs to refrain from coming onto the Muir campus.
Pasadena Police Lt. Phlunte Riddle confirmed Monday that Gibbs faced an investigation of the sexual misconduct allegation by a Muir High student, but said no charge was filed because the girl offered conflicting statements to police.
