- Charles White: Reader Doris Finch found an ad for the Swann Galleries in the most recent New Yorker, illustrated by a Charles White charcoal. Swann holds regular auctions of African American fine art, and Altadena's White has his art frequently represented.
- Umm ... coffee! The Institute of Domestic Technology will hold another class by Ian Riley of LAMILL to teach you how to roast your own coffee beans. It's this Saturday, Feb. 11, at the Zane Grey Estate. Runs from 10 AM to noon, cost is $95, with snacks by master chef Steve Rudicel worth the price of admission alone. - Local scholars do good: Samuel Nemati of Altadena was recognized for outstanding academic accomplishments by being named to the LeTourneau University Dean's List for the Fall 2011 semester. Samuel achieved a grade point average between 3.50 and 3.99 for the semester. And Brianna Dekine was among over 1800 students from Wake Forest University (Winston-Salem NC) who made the Fall Dean's List.
