PUSD Board of Education members are pushing local charter schools to increase the diversity of their students and enroll more children who are learning English.
Scrutiny of the publicly funded but privately managed schools came while officials deliberated this month on charter renewals for the Aveson School of Leaders in Altadena, Aveson Global Leadership Academy in Pasadena and Pasadena Rosebud Academy, which meets at the Loma Alta Elementary School building.
The board approved the Aveson charters but ordered plans for improving diversity. Rosebud, an 80-student elementary school, was denied permission to expand up to eighth grade and told to diversify its mostly middle-class African American student body.
