The New York Times has an alarming story about "citrus greening," a bacterial disease of citrus trees carried by the winged Asian citrus psyllid insect. The psyllid first appeared in San Diego in 2008, and, according to the Times, it could be the death knell of the backyard citrus farmer. Featured in the story is Martin Koning-Bastiaan of Altadena, who is pessimistic about the survival of residential citrus trees in California.
