- Tournament grants: Over two dozen San Gabriel Valley nonprofit organizations were the recipients of $100,000 worth of grants from the Pasadena Tournament of Roses Association, including Mentoring & Partnership for Youth Development at Muir High School. Bill Kisliuk at the Pasadena Sun has the full rundown.
- For the birds: The never-annoying Steve Bass points out this LA Weekly blog article on local birding activities (yes, LA Weekly and birding -- who'd'a thunk it?). Writer Tawny Flechtner (which sounds like the name of a bird herself -- "Look! A tawny flechtner!") use an alt-weekly word we don't use here in her post, so be warned. It also quotes Altadena's inimitable Judy Bass, whom we strongly believe Steve knows. If you want to get down with the birds, there's a free bird walk at Eaton Canyon Nature Center on the third Sunday of each month, starting at 8 AM (next one is June 16). Birder Hill Penfold (which doesn't sound like a bird, but does sound like an origami move) leads the hike, which starts at the building. Bring your binoculars, shade hat, and water, but not your dogs, please.
