The Los Angeles County Fire Department says that -- based on real-life-experience -- the "triangle of life" method of earthquake survival doesn't work.
So to give us some ideas of what does work, the LAFD has released a booklet (available here in PDF form) about surviving earthquakes and other disasters.
As for what you do during an earthquake: the watchword is "Drop-Cover-Hold On" (with animation to show exactly what you should do).
