The Arroyo Food Co-op invites the community to celebrate Food Day 2012 with a screening of the movie "Fresh" on Wednesday, October 24. The event will take place at 6:30 PM at the Altadena Public Library, 600 E. Mariposa Street in Altadena.
Food Day is an annual nationwide celebration and a movement for healthy, affordable, and sustainable food. The priorities of Food Day are to promote safer, healthier diets; support sustainable and organic farms; reduce hunger; reform factory farms to protect the environment, and support fair working conditions for food and farm workers. Its ultimate goal is to strengthen and unify the food movement in order to improve our nation’s food policies.
Directed by Ana Sofia Joanes, “Fresh” is an underground documentary that explores sustainable agriculture and depicts the farmers, activists, and entrepreneurs—including Joel Salatin, Will Allen, Michael Pollan, and George Naylor—who are reinventing America’s food system.
Representatives from Pasadena and Altadena organizations who are working toward the goals celebrated by Food Day will be in attendance to provide resources, information, and brief presentations on their work prior to the screening. Participating groups will include: Muir Ranch, Altadena Farmer’s Market, Fair Trade Pasadena, Culture Club, and the Pasadena Department of Public Health.
The Arroyo Food Co-op, established as a California Consumer Cooperative Corporation, will serve as an alternative to corporate-owned grocers in the community and will be entirely owned by its members. It will offer organic, sustainably, and locally sourced products along with humanely raised meats, fair trade items, and non-GMO produce.
Anyone can shop at the co-op, but those who make an investment and become member-owners receive additional benefits, including patronage refunds during profitable years. The full investment to join is $300; however the co-op offers a payment plan of $30 per year.
