Friday night, artist Stephanie Pinto (Calacachica, aka "Skull Girl") installed some not-so-traditional ofrendas, or Day of the Dead altars, in front of El Patron Mexican Restaurant. Coincidentally, it was also the birthday of El Patron owner Alex Cortes, who said he figured the altars added to the festivities and reminded him of his childhood in Mexico.
So amidst the birthday balloons and mariachi music, patrons of El Patron were treated to three altars constructed by PInto:
- One was a celebration of Altadena's 125th birthday, featuring pictures of such notables as Richard Feynman, Charles White, Prof. Lowe, and many other Altadena luminaries;
- One was open to the community to remember their own deceased loved ones.
- And a dog-house-shaped altar for pets, where you could remember your own furry departed.
