" A Veterans Day Wish"
from gloriana casey
So long ago---1918---
The GREAT WAR's victory.
Eleventh hour of the day
eleventh month, you see.
And Woodrow Wilson started this,
a day called Armistice;
remembrance of the war lost dead,
with hopes that Peace persists.
In 1919 came the plan
for business then to cease.
Two minute mark --- 11 a.m.
to think on worldly peace.
Then 1921 ---this date,
a monumental plan,
the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier,
to serve for all the land.
Though once upon a time, the states
could choose their holiday.
October was the choice for some,
as each state chose its way.
Dwight Eisenhower was the one
in 1954.
the name was changed to Veterans Day
for those that served in war.
Though now a federal holiday,
all states they celebrate.
November is the time of choice;
all veterans share this date.
The Great War was the one they said
to put war in arrears,
but 94 years now have passed,
with lives still lost in tears.
Although this latest war we have,
and this one SANDY named,
we wish for peace on the East Coast
for weather can't be tamed.
On Veterans Day, we say thank you,
to soldiers everywhere.
Parades and music last one day,
but does that show we care?
For gratitude can be life long,
our needs, they do entwine.
Returning soldiers need those jobs,
for lives put on the line!
A Marshall Plan I wish for them
in infrastructure zone.
For they can build our nation up,
rebuild their Home Sweet Home.
