The Altadena Sheriff's Station has been investigating a series of catalytic converter thefts from parked vehicles. Thieves target an automobile’s catalytic converter for resale as a used part to disreputable repair shops or for the scrap value of the precious metals contained inside. Toyota and Mitsubishi vehicles are frequently targeted.
A catalytic converter is an emission control device that is located under the vehicle within the exhaust system. Some vehicles have more than one converter depending upon the model. The cost to replace a single catalytic converter can easily exceed $1,000.
Thieves generally target converters at night and use simple hand tools to remove the bolts and nuts that secure the device to the vehicle. The Simi Valley Police Department is recommending that vehicle owners consult with a trusted repair shop and request that the bolts and nuts securing the catalytic converter to the exhaust system be “tac welded” together to prevent their removal with simple hand tools. Removal of the converter will still be possible by using tools that generally create a significant amount of noise, something a thief will not be able to do in the middle of the night without drawing unwanted attention to their crime.
