Oh Valentine, oh Valentine,
from whence forth came this day?
That time shrouded in History's mist-----
in ancient past, they say.
It seems that quite a few of saints
were martyred Valentines.
So many tales, but which is first---
religion's long timelines.
That art of LOVE, from ancient Greece,
with Eros, we know well.
He shot 2 arrows, gold or lead,
to LOVE or ----to repel!
Still others say it's courtley love
with Chaucer's rhyme and sauce!
Though Shakespeare too, he adds his twist---
a play--- "Love's Labour's Lost."
More modern now, those lovely cards
in 19th century,
a woman, Esther Howland, gave
its modern history.
By 1881 it seems
the card business took flight;
$100,000.00 worth of sales
in Valentine delight!
Today we share those lovely cards,
chocolate and roses.
Though some do press for presents dear;
NOT diamonds? Turn their noses!
A holiday for things to share,
where LOVE reigns for the day.
Material things are nice--- but then,
LOVE needs a longer stay!
So what are we to do today
in celebration pure?
For flowers wilt and chocolate melts,
but-----LOVE it should endure!
Well--- LOVE can be for people sure,
but LOVE can be of place.
