Community correspondent Amy Jaecker-Jones captured these jewel-toned beauties:
I was privileged to come across Altadena's flock of wild peafowl, last Friday morning, at the intersection of Mt. Lowe Drive and Maiden Lane. I think this flock may be one of our town's best kept secrets. Several neighborhood walkers mentioned that they see the peafowl every morning. One man said that the most he's ever seen were seven. That morning, I spotted nine, including several "pied" males with splotchy coloring. In one of the windows, a dad and his daughter watched with delight as several peahens pecked among the plants in their front yard. Another hen was perched on the ridge of their roof. Several other walkers who, like me, had come to this spot to access our town's wonderful trail system, showed just as much surprise and delight at this colorful sighting.
