- Myth, taken: Alta-photographer Sarah Allegra, whom we’ve featured here before, recently had a chance to create one of her mythology-themed photographs with a new model: Peter S. Beagle, author of The Last Unicorn, among other books. (Allegra is partnering with Beagle’s publishers in some future work, so stay tuned for that). Allegra’s website has a whole breakdown about how she created a dreamlike atmosphere in her Altadena living room on a Walmart budget. She’s also putting together workshops on how you can create your own mythological photographs. Check out her website for details.
- Home for sale: The 1948 Altadena home of architect Alfred W. Day has gone on the market. Day collaborated with Gregory Ain and Joseph Johnson on the Park Planned, Avenal, and Mar Vista housing tracts (Park Planned is in Altadena). Day’s midcentury modern home is listed at $599,000, which Curbed LA says is a steal.
- Case Studies: More architecture news we missed: The Case Study Houses were a bunch of midcentury moderns designed thru a program by Art & Architecture Magazine in the mid-1940’s, most located in Southern California. The houses, some by the likes of Richard Neutra, Pierre Koenig, and Charles Eames, were meant to be modest, single-family dwellings made with new (for the ’40’s) materials and construction techniques. The National Register of Historic Places recently added a batch of 11 houses to its list, which include two that are a short drive away: Case Study House #10 is at 711 San Rafael in Pasadena, and Case Study house #20 is at 2275 Santa Rosa Avenue in Altadena. The Altadena house is further distinguished by being the home of breakthrough 20th century designer and filmmaker Saul Bass. Other short-drive case study houses are at 857 Chapea Road, Pasadena, and 4755 Lasheart Drive, La Cañada Flintridge.
