There is something for everyone at the Pasadena Senior Center in January. Events listed below are free for PSC members. Some events require advance reservations as noted. All events take place at Pasadena Senior Center, 85 E. Holly St.
- Friday Movie Matinees – Great movies can take us to different places and times unlike anything else. Jan. 17 – “Moulin Rouge!” (2001) starring Nicole Kidman, Ewan McGregor and John Leguizamo.
- Memory Loss Education – Wednesdays, Jan. 15, 22, 29 and Feb. 5, from 10 a.m. to noon. This Brain Health series will teach you about memory loss and what can be done to help yourself and those you love. Session One covers memory loss and aging; Session Two covers the basics of memory loss, dementia and Alzheimer’s Disease; Session Three covers early detection and the 10 signs to look for; and Session Four covers hypertension, diabetes and Alzheimer’s Disease. - Low Vision Screening – Thursday, Jan. 16, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Low vision screenings are designed to assist partially sighted people in the selection of magnifiers and other devices to improve reading and other visual tasks. Appointments take about an hour and advance registration is required; call (626) 795-4331. Presented by the Braille Institute.
- Your Life and Your Legacy – Thursday, Jan. 16, at 10 a.m. You should have a say in your own legacy. Learn how to save by pre-planning for your funeral and burial. Presented by Rose Hills Memorial Park.
- Health Fair – Friday, Jan. 17, from 9 to 11 a.m. – Glucose screenings (with two-hour fasting required) and blood pressure and hearing screenings are among the services offered. Health fairs take place the third Friday of every month. For more information call (626) 685-6732.
- LA Opera: Billy Budd – Monday, Jan. 22, at 1 p.m. An LA Opera community educator will discuss this Benjamin Britten opera based on the classic Herman Melville novella. It is a powerful tale of innocence and betrayal on the high seas as a young sailor’s unwitting actions compel his captain to make a fateful decision.
- Gourmet Dining Club – Tuesday, Jan. 21, at 5 p.m. Join us for lively conversation and great food at this month’s featured restaurant, El Portal, 695 E. Green St. in Pasadena. Call team captains Margaret Lawson and Syd Heyman at (626) 794-5858 to make your reservation.
- The Benefits of a Prepaid Cremation Plan – Thursday, Jan. 23, at 10 a.m. Planning ahead of time to secure funeral services is often far less expensive than arrangements made after a death. Many people think their families know what they want when looking at cremation versus burial, but that is often not the case. Learn how to plan appropriately. Presented by the Neptune Society.
- Book Club at the Center – Friday, Jan. 24, at 1 p.m. Read “State of Wonder” by Ann Patchett and join other members of the Senior Center Book Club for a discussion. Research scientist Dr. Marina Singh is sent to Brazil to track down her former mentor who seems to have disappeared in the Amazon while working on an extremely valuable new drug. The last person sent to find her died before completing his mission. Plagued by trepidation, Marina embarks on an odyssey into the jungle in hopes of finding answers about her friend’s death, her company’s future and her own past. - Outlook and Opportunities – Thursday, Jan. 30, at 10 a.m. Are you concerned about the stock market and the economy in 2014? Learn about trends that will help put your concerns into perspective by exploring the pace of economic recovery, anxieties about deficits and debts, the economic outlook, strategies to address the impact of inflation and interest rates, plus domestic and international opportunities. Presented by Edward Jones Investments.
