"ShakeOut" is an unprecedented week of events this November that will inspire Southern Californians to get ready for big earthquakes and keep our disasters from becoming catastrophes. ShakeOutwill involve residents, businesses, communities, and schools in the largest-ever emergency response exercise and public drill, where millions of Southern Californians practice what to do during and after a major earthquake. The June 4th KickOff event launches a public education campaign and a series of regional activities to buildparticipation in the ShakeOut.
The highlight of the June 4th event will be the presentation of a new scenario for a magnitude 7.8 earthquake on the southern San Andreas Fault. The ShakeOut Scenario, developed by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) and many partners, details the expected fault rupture and shaking, physical impacts, and the emergency response, health, social, and economic consequences of this earthquake. The scenario is the basis for the regional ShakeOut Drill on November 13th,and for California's "Golden Guardian" multi-day emergency response exercise which involves emergency managers, firefighters, government agencies, and others.
Speakers will include scientists and engineers who created the report, as well as government, business, education, and other leaders.
A document with a map, directions and parking information is on the website.
