Pasadena's renowned travel store Distant Lands and local author Rebecca Bricker are teaming up for three events to inspire women to make their travel dreams a reality.
Bricker's recently published memoir Tales from Tavanti: An American Woman's Mid-Life Adventure in Italy is the story of her year in Florence, after her only child left for college. No empty nest for her. In fact, she sold the nest, shed half of her belongings and headed to Italy - and soon found herself center stage in the comedy-drama of Italian life, surrounded by colorful characters including a maniacal Mafia princess and a playboy leather merchant.
Her talks at Distant Lands will be geared to women who want to travel, but need a nudge and some trip-planning guidance:
- Mon., March 26 at 7:30 p.m. Tales from Tavanti
Author reading followed by practical advice on coping with red tape and culture shock as a foreigner in Italy.
- Wed., April 11 at 7:30 p.m. Planning Your Dream Trip
Bricker will show you how to map out a realistic itinerary that allows you to enjoy your travel experience and stay within your budget. You'll learn about trip-planning resources, what should be on your pre-departure checklist and how to deal with problems that may arise when you're traveling. Come with a fantasy destination in mind-and a friend who might want to be your travel buddy. Fee: $10
- Wed., April 25 at 7:30 p.m. Traveling LIGHT!
This is a packing "therapy" session for those who can't imagine traveling without six pairs of shoes and electric rollers. Bricker will demonstrate how to pack a carry-on as your ONLY bag for a two-week trip. Bring your packing list of 10 essentials and she'll help you work through your issues. This will be fun and cathartic! The workshop will feature travel accessories that help lighten your bag-and a few "cheats" that make room for souvenirs. Fee: $10
Reservations are requested for these events. Please call Distant Lands at 626-449-3220. The store is located at 20 S. Raymond Ave. in Old Town Pasadena.
