State Supt. of Public Instruction Tom Torlakson came to northwest Pasadena’s Washington Accelerated Elementary School — a once-struggling campus of primarily low-income students that now ranks as the school district’s most improved — to announce statewide Standardized Testing and Reporting program results.
STAR tests in math, English and other subjects are used to determine how public schools rank in state Academic Performance Index and federal Adequate Yearly Progress reports, due out in October.
The tests measure student comprehension on a sliding scale, with those ranking as proficient or advanced also meeting or exceeding federal Department of Education standards.
In the Pasadena Unified School District, 52% of students hit the mark in English, up from 50% last year. Math scores remained even at 46%.
