Tasty vegan: LA Weekly, which has been giving the High 'Dena a lot of love lately, talks about its five favorite Vegan cookbooks, and No.1 is Joseph Shuldiner's "Pure Vegan." They say "Shuldiner isn't merely a cottage food industry herald, he also happens to be a fantastic graphic designer." With this book, the Institute of Domestic Technology, and the Altadena Farmer's Market to juggle, Shuldiner's Altadena foodie renaissance man.
The Art of Hardware: HuffPo New York has an article by Tina Orlandini about a hardware art show in Brooklyn: hardware-themed art being shown inside a hardware store. It's been good for Crest Hardware, drawing in customers and art fans. This sounds so Altadenan, and no wonder: Orlandini dedicates it to her father, Jim Orlandini, owner of Newland True Value and Altadena Hardware. We're just thrown a big hint their way.
Jacksonian: this pro-Prop 38 ad takes place at Jackson Elementary School, with teachers, students, and parents touting the benefits of passing the proposition.
Urban to wild: Altadena's Charles Thomas, currently Pacific West Regional Youth Programs Manager for the National Park Service, is giving a talk on "Inner City to the Out-of-Doors," at the Redlands Forum on Oct. 10 at Redlands. Charles will discuss how to get underserved, inner-city youth to become interested in wild places (he was one of those, once!)
