One candidate is out, but that still leaves a healthy field of 16 candidates for eight open positions in the upcoming Altadena Town Council elections.
Election committee chair Eric Pierce told the Altadena Town Council that the committee rejected the application of Samir A. Sayegh. Sayegh had called in at the Friday deadline to say he was stuck in traffic, so he was originally allowed to submit late -- but, Pierce said, he hadn’t even filled out the paperwork before the deadline, and the committee rejected his application.
Several of the candidates spoke at Tuesday night's town council meeting, which was also a candidate forum, with Pierce reading the candidate statements of those who weren’t there. Neighbors Building a Better Altadena will also hold a candidate forum at the community center on May 29 at 7 PM. The election will be June 8.
Pierce said that polling places will be Gordy’s Garage; S&J Automotive; the Podley Properties cottage on Altadena Drive; Farnsworth Park; Loma Alta Park; the Altadena Main Library; and a location to be named later somewhere near Woodbury Road and Fair Oaks Avenue. Polling hours are 9 AM to 3 PM, except the library, which will start at 10 AM.
There will also be “pre-election” balloting for those who can’t make it to the polls on Saturday at the Altadena Community Center lobby, from 5-9 PM Tuesday, June 4.
Also at the council meeting:
- Officer Thomas MIller of the California Highway Patrol said that the patrol will have special enforcement zones along Lincoln Avenue, Fair Oaks Avenue, and Woodbury Road, as well as around local schools: MIller said that parents had been observed driving erratically, double parking, and making U-turns during student dropoff
- Melisza Hernandez of the county parks department said that summer camp at Charles White Park for ages 5-12 runs June 10-Aug. 9, from 8 AM-6 PM. Registration before the end of the month is $20 per week, starting in June $25. Loma Alta Park will also have a summer camp, running June 10-Sept. 5, for $75/week. Camp for tiny tots is $70/week, and a teen camp runs $65-$130/mo. Contact the parks for details.
Henandez also said that the Loma Alta Park pool will open Saturday, June 15. The park will also hold the “Parks after Dark” program again this summer, with music, movies, free classes, dance, art, and more activities on Thursday-Saturday in July and August. - Jessica Aldridge from Athens Services said that the curbside cleanup days will be held on Saturdays in June and July. Athens customers will receive the schedule for when the cleanup is scheduled for their neighborhood.
