Sunday, June 23 

Between 7:00 AM and 3:30 PM – A residential vandalism occurred in the 2100 block of Roosevelt Avenue. Suspect(s) shattered a window by using a pellet gun. 

3:00 PM – A grand theft occurred in the 3200 block of Mesaloa Av. Suspect(s) retrieved the items from the front porch. Loss: wall sculpture, (2) Italian ceramic vases. ***Incident occurred between 5/28/13 and 6/23*** 

5:20 PM – A petty theft from an unlocked vehicle occurred in the area of Sierra Bonita Avenue. & Woodbury Road. Loss: purse, keys, personal identification. 

Between 7:30 PM and 7:30 AM (Monday) – A vehicle burglary occurred in the 600 block of W. Altadena Drive. Loss: stereo and speakers. 

Monday, June 24

Between 8:00 AM and 10:00 PM – A petty theft occurred in the 1000 block of Alta Pine Dr. Loss: deep fryer. 

Between 6:00 PM and 3:38 PM (Tuesday) – A residential vandalism occurred in the 400 block of Figueroa Drive. Suspect(s) broke the kitchen window with an unknown object. 

Tuesday, June 25 

11:12 AM – A petty theft occurred in the 800 block of E. Sacramento Street. Loss: metal gate, double sliding door, window screens. 

9:20 PM – A suspect (female/47) was arrested in the 700 block of Sacramento Street. for domestic battery after she assaulted her boyfriend. 

11:45 PM – Suspect Mark Arellano (19 years old/Los Angeles) was arrested at Ventura Street/Fair Oaks Avenue for illegally possessing a weapon. 

Fireworks and Food Trucks cater to every taste

A festive Altadena pre-Fourth took place Tuesday night, as the food trucks lined up at the Altadena Golf Course before the big fireworks show at the Altadena Country Club. We were there early, before the crowds got thick, to check out the Altadena Chamber of Commerce's second annual event, a fundraiser for the Marion Lee Wullschlager Scholarship.

1. So many choices!

2.  The Chamber's Leslie Aiken was selling festive holiday swag.

3. A-Rockin' Ice Hawaiian Ice truck was a good place to stop on a hot afternoon.

4. We can't even pronounce "Beignet," much less know what it is!

5. After some complaint about the facilities last year, porta-potties were abundant at the event.

Found: black lab [back home]

Out of our usual pet range, but we have a soft spot for black labs:

We found this lovely lady on Washington and Allen on June 30 in the afternoon. She is clearly someone's dog because she was well taken care of and very friendly. She was really hot and seemed a bit lost or confused. She jumped on our car window, and when I opened the door, she jumped into our car. It was a very hot day, and we were worried she would get hit by a car because she had been walking in traffic on Washington and Allen. We took her to the Pasadena Humane Society on 361 South Raymond, and if you know this dog or can spread the word, please do so because I am certain her owners must be looking for her, and they can claim her on Tuesday by calling 626-792-7151. 

Former Altadena Capt. McLean to be Santa Paula's top cop

Former Altadena Sheriff Capt. Steven McLean, who retired last year after 32 years in the sheriff's department, has just been appointed Santa Paula's police chief, according to news reports.

The Ventura County Star quotes Santa Paula City Manager Jaime Fontes as saying, after a nationwide search, McLean “is clearly the most qualified candidate of what was an excellent candidate pool.” 

Prior to being named Altadena's captain, McLean was a unit commander in Altadena. He has a master's degree in homeland security and is a graduate of the FBI Academy.

McLean was Altadena's top cop for two years before retirement.  According to the Star, he starts work this week but will be formally sworn in in August.

Game officials put down pregnant doe injured by unleashed dog in Millard Canyon

Fish and Game officers put down a pregnant deer Tuesday at Millard Canyon after she was severely injured by a hiker's unleashed dog.

Millard Canyon caretaker Lonnie Fehr told Altadenablog that the deer was bitten on the neck and suffered at least one broken leg.  

Fehr contacted Bonny Schumaker, a Millard Canyon resident whose nonprofit On Wings of Care rescues animals around the country. Schumaker said that she contacted a wildlife veterinarian to look at the animal, but Fish and Game officials arrived first and shot the deer to end its agony.

Schumaker said that the hiker, who is a regular in the area, has frequently brought her dogs to run in the area and they are known to chase wildlife.

Dogs in Forest Service areas are required to be on a leash.

 

Spotty day ...

Entries may be a bit erratic today -- wife AND ex-wife are both hospitalized, so we'll be jockeying three kids and maybe spouse to their places today, so your indulgence is asked!

 

Sheriff will beef up patrols July 4 to enforce zero tolerance on large fireworks

 Westside Altadena residents have complained for years about loud, commercial-grade fireworks illegally firing off in their neighborhoods on July 4.  Altadena's sheriff captain says that he is beefing up patrols and enforcing "zero tolerance" on illegal fireworks, but catching and charging the people involved is "difficult, it's very difficult."

Altadena Sheriff Capt. John S. Benedict said that there will be two additional patrol cars out on the evening of July 4, bringing the total to five for the night.  "We're looking at no tolerance towards fireworks, and we'll be issuing citations, making arrests, and taking appropriate actions," Benedict said.

But he acknowledged that it's not easy.  "It's a chasing game is what it is," Benedict said.  If a resident calls in a fireworks complaint, "by the time we're there, they're gone, or sequestered somewhere until we leave," Benedict said.

Lighting illegal fireworks is a misdemeanor offense, Benedict said, which means it has to be witnessed by an officer or a citizen's arrest has to be made for charges to be filed.  "Most of these are misdemeanor offenses not committed in our presence, so that makes it very hard to take action,' Benedict said.

The onslaught of hot, dry weather only makes the problem more urgent, Benedict said.  "I understand people's frustration.  I understand people are scared, because the fire potential is high … obviously, we need the ability of the community to put themselves together and say 'this is not the thing to do.'"

Found pets in Altadena: shih tzu, puppy [one is home]

First: remember that tonight is the Altadena Town & Country Club's annual fireworks display.  The fireworks start at about 9:30 -- please keep your dogs and cats well-secured INDOORS tonight.  Judging by experience, this usually primes the pump for boneheads who have their own illegal fireworks, so expect explosions to be going on in town well through the night.  If he's an outdoor dog, make him an indoor dog this week.

Altadena Independence Week tips

Altadena doesn't do things the usual way -- we have our fireworks on July 2, thank you -- and here's few tips for the week ahead:

• Fireworks and Food Trucks July 2: The Altadena Town & Country Club will hold its annual fireworks display tomorrow night, July 2, with the first sparks going off about 9:30 PM.
  
  But before that, the Altadena Chamber of Commerce will hold a festive "Fireworks and Food Trucks" event in the parking lot of the Altadena Golf Course, starting at 6 PM.  Come early, grab something to eat, and stake out a good spot to see the fireworks. A portion of the proceeds will go to benefit the Chamber's Marion Lee Wullshlager Scholarship Fund.
• No fireworks in Altadena:  The Altadena Sheriff's Station reminds all residents and visitors that the best way to celebrate the Fourth of July holiday with family and friends is by attending professional fireworks shows such as Americafest at the Pasadena Rose Bowl Stadium.  The sale or possession of all fireworks is illegal in Altadena. Violators are subject to confiscation and impound of vehicles; up to one year in jail and fines up to $50,000. Call Altadena Sheriff's at (626) 798-1131 to report illegal fireworks. 
  
  
• Pet safety:  Fireworks, whether on July 2, July 4, or any time, can disturb your dogs, cats, or other pets.   The flyer (see graphic) reminds us to have an attached and visible ID on your pet, a recent picture available, and exercise her early in the day.  If you're going off to see the fireworks, keep them securely in the house with a treat and some soothing music, if that helps them.  (Some of our readers swear by the Thundershirt).
  
  
• July 4: There will be at least two neighborhood Independence Day parades worth staking out:  Sonoma Drive's 54th annual patriotic fete, and the several-block-long Pepper Drive parade, both starting at 10 AM. 
  
  Several nearby communities will have their own fireworks displays (a list in LA County is accessible here), and the granddaddy of them all is the Americafest at the Rose Bowl (more information here). 

Farnsworth Park summer concert series kicks off with Down Beat Express July 6

The Sheriff Support Group's Summer Concert Series at Farnsworth Park Amphitheater kicks off with the Down Beat Express this Saturday, July 6:

For 2013 the emphasis will be “dance” for the Down Beat Express “Dance” Big Band Summer Concert.

Starting in the ‘30s for Benny Goodman’s “Let’s Dance”, to the ‘40s with Glenn Miller’s “In the Mood”, the ‘50s for Dick Clark’s “Band Stand Boogie”, and the ‘60s Ray Charles hit “I Can’t Stop Lovin You”...and a lot more in between. There may even be some “Blues Brothers” blues.

Altadena’s own Jennifer Gates will sing the danceable hits of Frank Sinatra, Nat Cole, Ella Fitzgerald and several others. All in all, a night of dance music and “standards” from “The Great American Song Book”!

Accompanied by Altadena’s own Down Beat Express a17-piece big band performing their own arrangements of swing era standards and truly “blasts from the past” big band hits. Pat Emmett is the music director.So join us and let’s dance!

Concerts are free and family-friendly.  Music starts at 7 PM, but bring a picnic ahead of time and make a night of it.  Food will be available for purchase from El Patron Mexican Restaurant, and beer and wine from the Altadena Rotary Club.

More misery predicted today: sheriff offers tips to stay cool

Triple-digit temperatures are again getting the attention of humans and pets alike in the greater Los Angeles area.

If you are planning to visit one of these Cooling Centers, it is advisable that you call in advance to make sure there is still seating available. If a  Cooling Center is not operational, check the attached list for another Cooling Center nearest you or call “211”. Check with your local library when looking for a place to cool down. • Offer help to your family, friends, and neighbors with limited access to air conditioning and transportation, such as seniors or those who are ill. Check on them frequently or take them to a location with air conditioning.
• Schools, day camps, and non-school related sports organizations or athletes should take extra precautions during extreme heat. Practices and other outdoor activities should be scheduled for very early or very late in the day in order to limit the amount of time spent in the sun and heat. Heat may worsen the affects of poor air quality in areas of heavy smog.
• Additional tips for those who must work or exercise outdoors:
• Drink water or electrolyte-replacing sports drinks often; do not wait until you are thirsty. Avoid drinking sweetened drinks, caffeine, and alcohol.
• Avoid drinking extremely cold water as this is more likely to cause cramps.
• Allow athletes or outdoor workers to take frequent rests.

Pay attention to signs of dehydration which include dizziness, fatigue, faintness, headaches, muscle cramps, and increased thirst. Individuals with these symptoms should be moved to a cooler, shaded place, and given water or sport drinks.

Portantino eyes state senate run

Former Assemblyman Anthony Portantino has only been home from Sacramento for six months, but the La Cañada Flintridge resident is already gearing up for his next shot at office — the State Senate seat in the 25th district.

That seat, currently held by Carol Liu (D-La Cañada Flintridge), will open up in 2016 when Liu must leave office due to term limits. The 25th district, established during last year's redistricting, includes Burbank, Glendale, Pasadena and La Cañada.

Portantino, a Democrat, said Friday that he is getting back into politics because people in his district want him to keep pushing for transparency in government and funding for education.

It's summer, and time for camps of all kinds.  Altadena Stables at 3064 Ridgeview Drive runs a summer camp for young riders.  Karin Bugge (the Altadenahiker), a horsewoman herself, shared this picture of the camp in progress.

"If you wonder about my interest in Altadena Stables, it’s one of the few vibrant public stables still left in the San Gabriel Valley," she writes.  "When we lose a stable, another doesn’t step in to take its place. And for those who are  horse lovers or owners like myself,  we want to keep this lovely bit of rural Altadena alive and thriving."

Altadena deputies looking for two in June 22 shooting incident

The Altadena Sheriff's Station is looking for two men who may be involved in a still-mysterious shooting.

According to a press release, deputies responded to a call near the 400 block of Stonehurst Drive on Tuesday, June 22, at 11:25 PM.  Witnesses said that two males were observed running from the area.  Deputies recovered 9 mm bullet casings and observed blood splatter, but no victims were located.

The runners were both described as male African Americans., 18-22 years of age, and about 5 ft. 7 inches - 5 ft. 10 inches tall.  one was wearing a black t-shirt, white basketball shorts, and black shoes.  The other was wearing a red hooded sweatshirt, black t-shirt, white or beige shorts and white shoes.

Altadena stolen car leads to hit and runs, police pursuit

Pasadena police arrested three juveniles in a case where a car stolen in Altadena was went on a hit-and-run spree, followed by a police pursuit.

The vehicle -- a blue Pontiac -- was reported in three hit-and-run collisions during the course of the day. Police received a call on the final collision at about 3:55 PM, on the 800 block of Sunset Avenue.  

According to a press release, officers attempted to stop the vehicle in the area of Pasadena Avenue and Walnut street, but it drove away, triggering a pursuit that took place at "slow to moderate speeds" on city streets.  With support from a helicopter, the pursuit ended in the area of Pepper Drive and Sunset Avenue.  According to the press release, the driver and two passengers fled the vehicle, but were were apprehended.

The Pasadena Waldorf School faculty, staff, students and community, honored the outgoing Eighth Grade Class of 2013 with the traditional Rose Ceremony. With tribute in song from each of the lower grades, culminating in a rose exchange from First Grade “buddies” who had been mentored by the Eighth Grade students, the students in the school were able to say good-bye to the exiting class while also wishing them a successful new beginning in high school. Later that evening, the Eighth Grade class enjoyed a meaningful and emotional graduation ceremony and party. Pasadena Waldorf School congratulates the Class of 2013.

Pasadena half-marathon will bollix up traffic Sunday

The Pasadena Half-Marathon takes place tomorrow, June 29.  While it doesn't venture into Altadena, there will be street closures and detours that may affect your trip into Pasadena.  

The organizers have a map here of traffic closure and detour areas, so plan accordingly!

Land Use Committee meeting cancelled Tuesday

Chairman Ken Roberts said that the Land Use Committee meeting, scheduled for Tuesday, July 2, has been cancelled (no action items and hey, fireworks).  The committee will resume meeting in August.

 

The Wild Life Company comes to the libraries July 2

The Friends of the Altadena Library's summer reading program presents The Wildlife Company in "Good Eats" on Tuesday, July 2.

In this fun and interactive program, youll meet zoo animals who love to eat -- and a few lucky volunteers will get a chance to try out zoo food themselves!

The program starts at 2 PM at the Altadena Main Library, 600 E. Mariposa St. , and 4 PM at the Bob Lucas Branch Library, 2659 N. Lincoln Ave. .

Sunday, June16

11:00 AM – A theft from an unlocked vehicle was reported in the 1000 block of Mount Curve Avenue. Loss: Wallet, flashlight, knife. 

5:37 PM – An assault occurred in the 200 block of W. Harriet Street. Suspects described as six male Hispanics, 18-25 years, driving a gray SUV; possibly Ford Expedition. Suspect vehicle last seen eastbound on Harriet St. 

Wednesday, June 19 

Between 12:00 AM and 9:00 AM – A vehicle vandalism occurred in the 1300 block of Terra Alta Avenue. Pasadena. The vehicle’s paint was intentionally scratched (“keyed”). 

2:30 PM – Suspect Aubrey Franklin (male/24 years old/Altadena) was arrested in the 2200 block of Casitas Avenue for felon in possession of a firearm and parole violation after detectives conducted a parole check of his residence. 

Thursday, June 20 

Between 12:00 AM and 1:00 AM – A petty theft occurred at Brake Masters, 2095 N. Lake Avenue. Loss: (1) gallon of gas. 

10:00 AM – A petty theft occurred in the 800 block of E. Sacramento Street. Loss: metal gate, sliding door, window screens. 

12:00 PM – Altadena detectives authored a search warrant and subsequently arrested Suspect Flanigan Walker (male/31 years old/Los Angeles) for burglary and Identity theft after property stolen in a local burglary was linked to him. 

9:55 PM – Suspect Eduardo Garcia (male/37 years old) was arrested at Crosby/Olive Ave. for being under the influence of drugs. Deputies contacted him after observing him walking in the middle of the street westbound on Crosby St.

The Los Angeles County Fire Department wants to remind everyone that the use of fireworks not only causes fires, but results in severe injuries and burns. 

Altadena Sheriff's Captain John Benedict urges everyone to make safety a priority onJuly 4th. 

Even sparklers, which many people consider safe, can reach 1,200 degrees Fahrenheit, causing serious burns and starting fires. Adults normally don’t allow their children to get near anything that hot, but for some reason they think it’s acceptable to put sparklers in the hands of little ones on the Fourth of July. 

Statistics show fireworks are among the most risky of consumer products. Nearly 10,000 fireworks-related injuries are treated in U.S. hospital emergency rooms every year and two of five people injured by fireworks are under 15 years old. The most current statistics from the National Fire Protection Association show that in 2009 more than nine out of 10, or 92 percent, of all fireworks-related injuries treated in hospitals were caused by fireworks that are allowed for consumer use by federal or state regulations. 

NOTE TO PARENTS: If your child has any fireworks prior to June 28th, the items are probably illegal and dangerous and should be 
turned over to your fire department or local police agency! 

Parents are liable for any damage or injuries caused by their children using fireworks.

Children's Museum kickoff July 11

We are excited to announce the formation of the Southern California Children’s Museum (SCCM) and our kick-off event on Thursday, July 11, 2013 from 5 to 8 PM at the Arroyo Seco Miniature Golf Course in South Pasadena. The SCCM will be located in the San Gabriel Valley and fill an important void in early childhood educational experiences.

Founded by Pasadena-area moms, SCCM will be located in the San Gabriel Valley and will have an emphasis on the local arts and culture found in our Southern California region. The museum will be primarily designed for children under the age of eight. Exhibits and activities will be play-based and focused on developing a child's gross and fine motor skills, while incorporating dramatic play elements. Our goal is to bring an environment focused on early childhood education to our newest generation while offering them a place to create lifelong memories.

Guests at the July 11 celebration will learn about the museum’s current happenings, enjoy refreshments and participate in a fabulous golf raffle. Kids are welcome to attend. Coffee with the Captain rescheduled to July 8

"Coffee with the Captain," a chance to meet Altadena Sheriff Capt. John S. Benedict and his staff and discuss community issues, has been rescheduled to Monday, July 8.  It was previously July 2 (but that's fireworks day in Altadena).

The meeting will be held from 5-6:30 PM at Café Culture, 1359 N. Altadena Drive.

 

County to open cooling centers during hot spell

With hot weather on the horizon through the weekend, the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health will open cooling centers throughout Los Angeles County to provide relief from the heat for the elderly and others who face heat-related health difficulties and stress, according to a press release from Supervisor Michael D. Antonovich. 

Local cooling centers are: the Altadena Senior Center, 560 E. Mariposa St., Monday-Friday, 8 AM-5 PM;  and the Pasadena Senior Center, 85 W. Holly Street, Monday-Friday 8:30 AM-4:30 PM, Saturday 8:30 AM-3 PM.

Public health officials have also given some advice for getting through the hot weather:

• Never leave children, elderly people, or pets alone in a parked vehicle.
• Wear light, loose fitting clothing to stay cool
• Drink water often.  Avoid drinking alcohol.
• Check on those in your neighborhood who have limited mobility.
• Stay in an air-conditioned area during peak heat hours i.e. a mall, park, or library.
• Avoid unnecessary sun exposure. When in the sun, wear a hat with a wide brim.
• Don’t exercise vigorously outside during the hottest hours of the day.

 

Two Eaton Canyon hikers rescued by combined responder teams

The Altadena Mountain Rescue Team, along with search and rescue teams from Sierra Madre and Montrose, rescued two hikers on Tuesday, June 25, in a complex technical rescue that lasted until the early morning hours.

According to a release from the Altadena Sheriff Station, members of the Altadena team were called out to a rescue in Eaton Canyon at about 6:36 PM.  Two hikers, trying to find a waterfall, wandered off the trail at Acrophobia Ridge toward Power Line Trail.  The release said that family members of the hikers contacted the Downey police department when the hikers did not return home, and Downyey notified the Sheriff's Department.

Montrose and Sierra Madre teams were called to assist at about 8:20 PM, according to the release, "as the position of the hikers was extremely precarious and dangerous. The expertise of all three teams was needed to handle the sophisticated operation that used harnesses to pull the hikers off the ridge and to safety. The operation ended in the early morning hours. There were no reported injuries. "

Foothill Water District offers rebates for conservation

Foothill Municipal Water District (FMWD) will continue to provide rebates for high efficiency toilets, turf removal and rain barrels beginning with the new fiscal year, July 1, 2013, announced Nina Jazmadarian, General Manager of FMWD.

During the previous fiscal year that ended June 30, 2013, $30,041 in rebates were provided to local residents to support the effort to be more independent of imported water supplies.

The following rebates are being offered to customers within the service area.

Residential High Efficiency Toilets - customers that replace older high-water use toilets with high-efficiency toilets can receive a $50 rebate.  Only Water-Sense qualified high-efficiency toilets with a capacity of 1.28 gallons per flush or less qualify for rebates. (Check with your water provider for additional rebate dollars on selected items).

Turf Removal Program- Foothill area residents can receive up to $800 in rebates for removing their thirsty lawns and replacing with California Friendly plants, drought tolerant plants, mulch, or pervious hardscape.

Rain Barrels - customers can receive a rebate of up to 50% of the cost of a rain barrel up to $100, for a maximum of 8 rain barrels by capturing stormwater and using it to irrigate landscape.

In addition to the above rebates, residential customers can receive the following rebates through Metropolitan Water District of Southern California at http://socalwatersmart.com.

High Efficiency Clothes Washers - a rebate of up to $85 for one washer is being offered. Washers must have a water factor of 4.0 or less.

Weather-based Irrigation Controller- a rebate of $80 for less than 1 acre and $25 per station for more than 1 acre of irrigation is being offered.

Rotating Sprinkler Nozzles - Pop-up spray head nozzles can be replaced with these low-precipitation rate nozzles to help reduce run-off and irrigate more efficiently. The rebate for nozzles is $4 per nozzle with a minimum of 15 per application.

Foothill area commercial and industrial customers can receive rebates on water conservation devices as well.  As a member agency of the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California, Foothill's customers are eligible for the Save-a-Buck Program which is now operating under the SoCalWaterSmart Program. Foothill Municipal Water District provides imported water to Crescenta Valley Water District, La Canada Irrigation District, Mesa Crest Water Company, Valley Water Company, Lincoln Avenue Water Company, Las Flores Water Company and Rubio Canon Land & Water Association.  Kinneloa Irrigation District, another retail agency, takes no water from Foothill.

Yellow Fever mosquito now in California

Yellow Fever Mosquito

Two new invasive mosquito species found in California are making it more difficult for mosquito control districts to protect the public from the biting insects. At the same time, counties in nearly every region of the state are reporting West Nile virus activity, including the first confirmed fatality as well as both mosquitoes and birds testing positive for the disease. "Now more than ever, it is imperative for everyone to protect themselves against mosquitoes," said Catherine Smith, executive director of the Mosquito and Vector Control Association of California (MVCAC). "Everyone needs to recognize that all it takes is the bite of a single infected mosquito for a person to become seriously ill," added Smith. 

 

The detection of Aedes aegypti (the yellow fever mosquito) in Fresno and Madera counties this month is complicating  mosquito control efforts and makes public cooperation a critical component to eradicating the yellow fever mosquito. This mosquito is not native to California and is an efficient carrier of diseases such as dengue, yellow fever, and chikungunya.  Aedes aegypti is a small, dark mosquito with white markings and banded legs. It may be active around dusk but bites most often during the day and readily enters homes for shelter and to bite people.

Asian tiger mosquito

Aedes aegypti joins Aedes albopictus (the Asian tiger mosquito) as a new vector and public health threat in California.  Just two years ago, the Asian tiger mosquito was found in the cities of El Monte and South El Monte in Los Angeles County.  The day-biting Asian tiger mosquito is characterized by its small size and the black and white stripes across its body and legs. This mosquito also can transmit various vector-borne diseases such as dengue and chikungunya. Southern California mosquito control agencies have been working aggressively to control and eradicate this invasive species. 

 

These new vector challenges to public health in California coincide with a national effort to raise awareness about mosquitoes and the diseases they transmit.  The American Mosquito Control Association (AMCA) has declared this week as National Mosquito Control Awareness Week.  Since 1935, the AMCA, an international organization of nearly 2,000 public health professionals, has been dedicated to preserving the public's health and well-being through safe and environmentally sound mosquito control programs.

AMCA and MVCAC ask that all Californians:

• Drain any standing water where mosquitoes could lay their eggs
• Empty and/or discard containers that hold water, including old tires
• Avoid being outdoors when mosquitoes are present
• Dress appropriately by wearing long sleeves and pants when outside
• Defend against mosquitoes by using DEET or other  EPA-registered repellents
• Be sure window and door screens are in good repair to prevent mosquitoes from entering the home

• Altadena gala helps PMHC: Over 100 guests attended Pasadena Mental Health Center’s sixth annual Fête – "Change the Beat" on Saturday, June 22 at Matt Nix and Melinda Stahl’s private estate in Altadena, raising over $35,000 in contributions for children and families who rely on PMHC for accessible mental health services. The event recognized Frank Taylor who served as PMHC’s board chair in 1984 and has provided loyal support to the organization for more than 29 years. Johanna Metzger was the event chair and provided vision and leadership to ensure the success of the event.
• Italian dinner and a French movie: Bulgarini Gelato's summer movie Saturday night is Les Emotifs Anonymes, a charming romantic comedy about chocolate.  Movies are always free. Farmer's Market: say 'Si' to Nocino

This week's Altadena Farmers' Market will have a little something for fans of Polynesian dance and Nocino.

"Nocino" is not something said by a flirtatious Italian bella.  Market manager Joseph Shuldiner says: "Nocino is a traditional Italian walnut liqueur, made when the nuts, still green on the tree, are picked unripe. The harvest is traditionally picked on San Giovanni Day, June 24 (Saint John the Baptist Day), in the morning by barefoot pickers.  To actually make Nocino, green (un-ripe) walnuts are steeped in neutral spirits (Vodka or Everclear) with spices for 60 days and then imbibed toward the end of fall."

If this sounds intriguing, the market will have a fresh (but limited) harvest of green English walnuts from the Institute of Domestic Technology farms this Wednesday, June 26.  "With each purchase, buyers will receive a recipe sheet with easy, step-by-step instructions on making Nocino at home, along with a Nocino cocktail recipe for when their batch of inky black walnut liqueur is ready to taste."

"Coffee with the Captain" at Café Culture July 8 [UPDATED]

The Altadena Sheriff's Station is holding another “Coffee with the Captain” event on Tuesday, July 2 Monday, July 8 from 5-6:30 PM at Café Culture, 1359 N. Altadena Drive (near the corner with E. Washington Boulevard).  

Altadena Sheriff's Station Captain John Benedict and his staff will be available to meet and answer questions.  According to a statement from the sheriff's station, "Captain Benedict has enjoyed meeting members of the community at these events. He finds these events an excellent opportunity to continue building on existing partnerships with the community and is very interested in hearing any questions or concerns anyone may have. These events help Captain Benedict and the Altadena Sheriff's Station in identifying and prioritizing issues occurring in the community."

County to beef up animal control services for dangerous dogs

Supervisor Michael D. Antonovich announced that  county Animal Care and Control may receive up to $3.1 million boost to its budget, including capital expenditures to protect the public from dangerous dogs.

In a statement from Antonovich's office, $775,000 has been approved for additional staffing and equipment in the final recommended budget, and $2.4 million set aside for adoption in the supplemental budget.

What this means in concrete terms is that five additional officers will be deployed on July 1, and nine new positions will be added to the Critical Case Processing Unit team, which investigates dangerous dog cases.  Three officers will be added to the Major Cases Unit, which investigates animal cruelty, neglect, hoarding, and illegal animal fighting.

The monies will also go to a new communications center in the Antelope Valley, new vehicles, and protective equipment.

“With additional staffing and resources, the County’s animal control officers will have the tools necessary to patrol our neighborhoods and hold irresponsible owners accountable when they allow their dogs to roam, fight, breed and attack other pets and people,” Antonovich said.

CALL hosts All-Star Tournament at Farnsworth Park Friday

The Central Altadena Little League (CALL) will host the 9-10 All Stars of District 17 in their annual tournament at Farnsworth Park.  All-star teams from around the district will play each other in tournament rounds daily from  Friday, June 28  through Sunday, July 7 (and July 8 if necessary).  There wil be no games July 4. 

Losing her Shadow: neighborhood dogs kill disabled woman's companion [UPDATED]

Shortly after taking a fall at her Altadena home, Lynn Walker, a special education teacher with the Los Angeles Unified School District, began losing muscle function.  In 2009, she was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease.

 

In 2010, she spoke elequently from her wheelchair at a meeting in the Altadena Public Library about improving access to the disabled.  Today, she has lost use of her arms and can no longer speak.  Walker speaks via a communication board, lighting up words, letters, and phrases with a laser pointer attached to her glasses.

Her constant companion for the past three years has been Shadow, her Shih Tzu, who often rode on her lap as they went through the day.  

That ended Thursday, June 20, when two loose dogs killed her friend.

Walker, Shadow, and a caretaker usually go for a walk in the early evening.  Walker said, “Most of the time we go together, but I did not feel good, so I just said I will not go today.”

According to Walker’s husband Alan, the caretaker took the dog on its leash along their usual route up St. James Place, where they live  She hadn’t gotten far when they were confronted by two dogs, a pitbull and Rottweiler,  who had escaped from their yard.  According to Alan Walker, the dogs belonged to a young man who lived just up the street.

Alan Walker said that Shadow was killed immediately and one of the dogs tore the caretaker’s pantleg as she fled screaming. 

Forest Service extends Station Fire closure area for another year

The National Forest Service has extended the closure of the Station Fire Recovery Area for another year.

According to an order signed May 24 by Angeles National Forest supervisor Thomas A. Contreras,  the service prohibits being in the Station Fire Recovery Area or any roads or trails within it, except for the Hidden Springs Day Use Area and Monte Cristo Campground.  

What this means locally is that popular hiking and camping areas around Millard Canyon, Mt. Lowe, and Gould Mesa remain off-limits for at least another year.

It's almost here: Farnsworth Park summer concert series kicks off July 6

The sure sign of summer in Altadena (besides some oppressively hot days) is the Sheriff Support Group's annual concert series at the Farnsworth Park amphitheatre.  

Returning for the 1th year, the Saturday night event promises to be bigger and better than ever.

Producer Robert Klomburg said that the Rotary Club of Altadena will again be selling beer and wine and El Patron Mexican Food Restaurant will once again be serving Mexican food on site. 

Returning favorites include openers the Downbeat Express with Jennifer Gates; Altadena's own Brian Hughes and Those Manning Bhoys; and crowd favorites Upstream, returning for their fourth appearance. The Blue Breeze Band is also returning for their second appearance. New to the mix are Altadena jazzman Louis Van Taylor and his quintet, and rockers Law & Disorder and The Groove.  

The grand finale is the return of Hot August Night, Dean Colley's Neil Diamond tribute to wrap up the summer.  All concerts are on Saturday starting at 7 PM.

PSYCO's Young Artist's Concert at Lake Ave. Church June 29

On Saturday, June 29, at 7:30 PM, in the chapel of Lake Ave. Church, 393 N. Lake Ave., the Pasadena Summer Youth Chamber Orchestra under the direction of Dr. Paul Sherman will present its annual Young Artist's Concert.

Performing with PSYCO this year will be Eva Polgar, pianist and winner of the Liszt piano competition.   Also on the program is 10 old Vera Hong violinist,  15 year old violist Daniel Hsiao, and cellist Justin Cheung, 14.  The program includes "An Italian Girl from Algiers" by Rossini, movement of Concerto #9 in A minor for violin (de Beriot), a movement of Cello Concerto in E minor (Elgar), Piano Concerto #2 in A Major (Liszt), and Concerto in G for Viola (Telemann).  

The Concert is free and made possible by a grant from the Tournament of Roses(r) Foundation and the Pasadena Arts & Culture Commission and the City of Pasadena Cultural Affairs Division.  Admission is free.

 

Liu to host forum on climate change and insurance needs at Pasadena library

On Friday, June 28, Senator Carol Liu will host a public forum titled “Insurance in an Era of Climate Change” with keynote speaker Dave Jones, California Insurance Commissioner.

As climate change has been fueling the frequency of wildfires and other unusual events, the Union of Concerned Scientists will present expert panelists to discuss the latest climate information, its impact on California homeowners insurance in high-risk areas, and how insurers, policymakers, and consumers can work together to identify the best methods to strengthen our resilience to the impacts of climate change.

“Wildfires cost California hundreds of millions of dollars each year in firefighting efforts and property damage,” said Adrienne Alvord, UCS California and Western States director. “With climate change fueling the frequency of wildfires, Californians who live in high-risk areas are facing an additional threat to the availability and affordability of their homeowners insurance.”

This forum will examine how current climate change information is affecting the insurance industry, and provide a clearer picture as to what Southern California residents can expect in years ahead.

Forum speakers will include:

• Susanne Moser, Ph.D., Director and Principal Researcher of Susanne Moser Research & Consulting in Santa Cruz, California. Relay racks up over $20,000 to date

Altadena's Relay for Life as brought in more than $20,000 for cancer research thus far, according to figures released by the local coordinators.

 

The American Cancer Society local fundraiser was held in Farnsworth Park on June 1-2, with 15 teams and 87 official participants in a 24-hour walk.  

Event chair Heather Morrow wrote in an email:  "I was happy to see that we are over the $20,000 mark and only 4,500 away from our community goal of $25,000.  We will be able to reach this goal by the end of August."

Vikingfest:  Next door at La Canada Flintridge the Lutheran Church in the Foothills hosts he Edvard Grieg Lodge of the Sons of Norway in "Midsummer Vikingfest"  11 AM-4 PM.  Learn about viking lore, culture, runes, and so much more --wear "garb" if you can! The event is free at the church, 1711 Foothill Boulevard.

Summer Movie Night at Bulgarini Gelato is La Vita Facile (The Easy Life), "a charming Italian comedy with an unexpected twist, the movie follows the love triangle of two contradictory doctors with a shared past." Movies are always free. Dinner will be offered - by reservation only - for $13.50, which will include a homemade pasta dish, salad, and a drink.  Reservations may be made by Friday (the day before the film) by email at catering@bulgarinigelato.com or by calling (626) 376-7662.  Dinner starts at 7:30, movie starts at sundown.

Folly Bowl presents HB3 (aka Hugh Bonar), who will play a representative sampling of his recent albums in the garden amphitheater at 1601 E. Loma Alta Drive.  Tickets are $5, show starts at 7 PM, and dress accordingly!

The Mentoring and Partnership for Youth Development board of directors, mentors, and staff would like to congratulate the 13 young men of the MPYD 2013 graduating class. These young men have worked harder than they’ve ever worked before, And as one member who will attend UC Irvine quietly stated, “It was all worth it,” looking down at his collection of medallions and sashes. The John Muir High school graduation ceremony took place on Friday June 7, at 1 PM at the Pasadena Civic Center. The graduating class all wore ear-to-ear smiles as they celebrated the ending of one incredible journey and embraced the beginning a new one.
