Students enjoy the spirit of fall

On Friday, Oct. 25, the children of Meher Montessori School, located at  943 E. Altadena Dr. in Altadena, celebrated the spirit of autumn with a cooking activity. The children all had the opportunity to help scoop out the seeds and guts of two pumpkins before setting them into a slow cooker with some water to cook.  After three hours, a little bit of  cinnamon, sugar and milk, they had a creamy, mildly sweet puree of pumpkin to taste. As is always the case with new foods, some children came back up for seconds, even thirds, whereas some barely put the pumpkin to their lips before deciding it wasn't for them. Either way, it was a messy, fun experience fo all. Next month¹s cooking activity will be Friendship Soup,where all the children will bring just a little, and together we will turn it into a bountiful soup full of friendship and love.

Election tomorrow: Library trustees, PCC Board

Local elections will be held tomorrow for seats on the Altadena Library Board of Trustees and, in west Altadena, for Pasadena City College board.

There are three candidates running for two seats on the library board; incumbent David Tuck, former board member Steven S. Lamb, and newcomer Meredith McKenzie.  We have profles of the candidates here:

There are also three candidates running for an open seat on the PCC Board, for the district that encompasses West Altadena, currently held by Geoffrey Baum, who has decided not to run again.  Candiates are Dianne Philibosian, Ross Selvidge and Alexander Keledjian.  Pasadena Now has a short profile of the candidates here.

Sheriff Department to discuss local crime trends at Tuesday's ACONA meeting

The Altadena Coalition of Neighborhood Associations will look at recent shooting incidents and how neighbors can continue to work on Altadena's downward trend on violent crimes at Tuesday night's meeting.

Speakers from the Sheriff's Department (to be announced) will be there to brief neighbors on the current positive trends, but also the recent spate of shootings on West Altadena Drive.  

ACONA meets at the Altadena Main Library, 600 E. Mariposa Street, from 7-8:30 PM Nov. 5.

St. Elizabeth School holds third annual Market on Nov. 17

Fourth annual LA Limerick Festival returns to the Ale House Nov. 12

We know that Judah and Gail Casburn's Altadena Ale & Wine House is a convivial place to meet for the over-21 crowd any day of the year

But once a year, it REALLY becomes an adults-only gathering as they turn up the naughty for a good cause.

Tuesday, Nov. 12 (that is, 11/12/13) the Ale House hosts the fourth annual LA Limerick Festival, where people gather to write, recite, and share their five-line poetry, usually recited with a knowing wink.

This year, the Festival is a benefit for "A Case for the Cure," to benefit City of Hope and cancer research.

Jan Michael Alejandro, founder of Nail Soup Productions, which is putting on the Festival, says that Festival readers come from all walks of life, including employees of JPL and, heavens, NPR.

Alejandro and Gail Casburn have been priming the pump the past few weeks by designating Tuesdays as limerick writing nights, where aspiring poets can scratch out a few words of verse and test their limericks out in public.

The event will be hosted again this year by 100.3 FM personality Mimi Chen as mistress of ceremonies. Special surprise guests are also promised.  

The event kicks off at 7 PM Nov. 12 at the Altadena Ale & Wine House, 2329 N. Fair Oaks Avenue.  Admission is $10 and all proceeds will go to City of Hope

St. Mark's selling Christmas Trees to fund Bad Weather Shelter

St. Mark's Episcopal Church in Altadena is seling Christmas trees to help support the Bad Weather Shelter in Pasadena:

Saint Mark’s Episcopal Church in Altadena has supported the Bad Weather Shelter for several years by volunteering our time and preparing hot and nutritious meals, as many of you do each year. The past two years, we have also financially supported the Bad Weather Shelter through our Christmas Tree Ministry. We have raised about $2500 each year for the Bad Weather Shelter through Christmas Tree sales to the members of our congregation, families at our elementary school and friends. This year we have challenged ourselves to double our contribution to the Bad Weather Shelter.

Here’s how you can help:

• Buy a Christmas Tree for your home from www.SaintMarksChristmasTrees.org.   You pre-purchase a Christmas tree in early November and pick up your tree on Saturday December 7 between 8 and 11 am at Saint Marks Church 1014 E, Altadena Dr, Altadena CA 91001.  Or if you live nearby, for a small donation, we’ll deliver the tree to your house.
• If you do not need a tree in your home, you can donate a tree to a local family. We make all the arrangements with the Pasadena Police PAL (http://www.ci.pasadena.ca.us/police/pasadena_pal_program/) for a local family to receive your generous gift.  The proceeds from donated trees also support the Bad Weather Shelter.

An important word about the Christmas trees we buy:

• The trees are cut fresh and delivered to us two or three days later.  They are fragrant, fresh and full.  We always delight in the quality and appearance of the trees. These are not your corner lot trees that sit for weeks after cutting before they reach your home.
•  Some people worry about buying a tree they have not seen.  If you worry, come early at 8 AM on December 7 and select your tree from all the trees of the same size and type. Most likely you’ll find a better tree than you hoped for when you purchased it.

Chamber still accepting nominations for citizen, business of the year

The Altadena Chamber of Commerce is still looking for a few good nominations for Altadena Citizen of the Year and Business of the Year.

The Chamber annually honors an outstanding local resident and a business or other organization at the installation of new officers in January.

Citizen of the Year and Business of the Year can be nominated by anyone.  Winners are chosen by a committee consisting of representatives of the Chamber, Altadena Heritage, Altadena Historical Society, Foothills Conservancy, Altadena branch of the NAACP, the Altadena Sheriff Support Group and Altadena Town Council, as well as past Citizens of the Year.

Lost cat, Midwick/Calavaras [Home now]

This is bad: a newly adopted cat that just took off (we had a dog in the family that was adopted from Pasadena Humane, driven home, and slipped out of her collar during the walk from the car to the house and took off running -- couldn't really call her as she didn't know her name yet! Was back in Pasadena Humane two days later, they recognized her and called. Whew!)

Anyway, Tina has lost her new cat:

We are looking for a large male cat who got out our front window on the evening of Wednesday, October 30th.

Description: Muscular male domestic short hair. Gray & white. Predominantly gray on back and face, white on belly, legs, and underneath chin. Neutered. One small white ring at tip of tail. Broad nose, beautiful large green eyes with distinctive black markings. Very vocal and friendly. Approximately 2 years old.

Location: Went missing from 1800 block  E. Calaveras Street near the corner where Midwick/Calaveras intersect just west of Allen.

Unfortunately no collar, tags or photo as we had Just adopted him from the Pasadena Humane Society. He is microchipped, however.

We had just named him Milo. 

UPDATE:  Apparently Milo was just checking out the neighborhood, because he came home this morning.

Braeburn Haunt rocks the block

Halloween in Altadena centers around the Judy Pastor and Vance Weisbach's haunted house on Braeburn Road.  We took a look at just a PART of the line to get in, with 45 minutes to go until closing.  The video is a little raw and dark, but that pretty much describes the scene, too!

Some resiential burglaries this week.  After a dry spell, the 24 Hour Fitness parking lot claims another victim.  Crime blotter provided by the Altadena Sheriff's Station.

Monday, October 21

2:29 AM – Darryl Phillips, 42 yrs, of Pasadena was arrested for possession of a controlled substance. 

Between 9:30 PM and 8:30 AM (Tuesday) – A vehicle burglary occurred in the 2800 block of St. James Place. Suspect(s) entered the vehicle via unknown means. Loss: none. 

Between 11:00 PM and 7:30 AM (Tuesday) – A petty theft from an unlocked vehicle occurred in the 3000 block of N. Mount Curve Avenue. Loss: gray/silver HP laptop. 

11:40 PM – An assault with a deadly weapon occurred in the 800 block of Ventura St. ***Suspect is known*** 

Six reported injured in collision at Lake/Calavaras Friday morning

The Altadena Sheriff's Station is reporting that an vehicle vs. building collision occurred at about 4:40 Friday morning on Lake and Calavaras.

The notice comes as part of the Altadena Sheriff Station's participation in a "Deputy for a Day" Twitter.  The tweet from Deputy Marc R. Mrakich says: 

Veh VS Building Lake/Calaveras at 440 am 6 people injured. CHP handling the report. No damage to the bldg. #LASD @ALDLASD #Altadena #poltwt

Altadena Sheriff's Station reports that California Highway Patrol is in charge of the  investigation,  We have reached out to them for more information.

The Pasadena Master Chorale, conducted by Altadena's Jeffrey Bernstein, is selling tickets for its next concert, "The Glory of Christmas"

The Chorale, along with the Orchestra Camerata, will perform Vivaldi's "Gloria" and Bach's "Magnificat" at the First Congregational Church, 464 E. Walnut Street, Pasadena, on Saturday, Dec. 14 at 7:30 PM.

Bear vs. chickens awakens Braeburn Road resident

Sandy Gillis heard the chickens clucking, with increasing panic, at about 4:30 AM Monday morning.

Gillis, who lives on the 1900 block of Braeburn Road, keeps chickens in a coop at the backyard of the rental house next door, which she also owns.

She went outside with one of her dogs and a cell phone with a flashlight app for illumination.  Her other dog had bloodied a chicken earlier in the day, so it wasn't part of the rescue party -- Gillis figured maybe a rat smelled the blood and got into the coop. But judging by the panicked clucking -- and chickens actually shrieking -- she wondered if it was something bigger, like a possum or raccoon.

As she approached, Gillis found the chickens huddled by the coop door -- which they never usually do -- and she heard something in the coop. She opened the door to let the chickens out.  The dog lost its nerve, turned tail, and ran home. She went around to the side of the coop and heard a thumping rustle -- "like a fat man bumping into big furniture," she said. Whatever was in the coop had left. And -- under the oak tree some 50 feet away -- there was a bear.

She called to her husband not to come outside, and made it back to the house.  The next morning, she found the bear peeled away a section of chicken wire and there was a dead chicken in the coop -- apparently a snack, abandoned when the humans showed up

Gillis has since patched up the coop, but is going to be listening closely to the chickens from now on.

• Valor: Sheriff Lee Baca awarded 18 Valorious and Meretorious Conduct Medals to members of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department for outstanding heroism in the line of duty. Close to home, Mererotrious Conduct and lifesaving medals were give to the members of the Air 5 helicopter crew, rescuers from Montrose Search and Rescue, and deputies from Crescenta Valley for rescuing a victim whose truck plunged off the Angeles Crest Highway.  Read the whole thing here.
• A day with a deputy:  The sheriff is having a busy week:  On Friday, Nov. 1, Sgt. Chris Meadows and Dep. Tony Moore, public information officers at the sheriff’s headquarters, will be responding to calls throughout the county and tweeting about it.  It’s all part of law enforcement’s Global Tweet-Along Day.  The officers wil be tweeting the calls they repond to and answering questions throughout their shift, from 12:30-7:30 PM.  Follow @LASDTalk on Twitter, and they will be using  #LASD and  t#POLTWT throughout the day. Altadena Station will be using  @ALDLASD.
• Something in the air: The Altadena Radio Team, a collection of amateur radio operators in ham, GMRS. and FRS (walkie-talkie) bands, will celebrate its one year anniversary on Wednesday, Nov. 6 at Café Culture, 1359 N. Altadena Drive, from 4-6:30 PM.  The Altadena Radio team practices regularly to prepare for emergencies . Plan to meet your radio people, learn a bit more about radios and how you can participate in helping your family and your neighborhood. You can bring your out of state contact information to fill out a radiogram that will be sent to your out of state contact when phones are not working. It is best to practice this before the emergency happens. Families, friends, and interested radio people are welcome.
• Hahamongna: There will be a special meeting of the Hahamongna Watershed Park  Advisory Committee on Wed., Nov. 13, at 6 PM at the Pasadena City Yards, 233 W. Mountain St., 2nd floor, Pasadena. Items planned for the agenda include a briefing by the LA County Dept. of Public Works Staff on the Draft EIR for the Devil’s Gate Sediment Removal Project; an update on Pasdena Equestrian Center leases; and an update on the Arroyo Seco Canyon project.
• Reception: There will be a reception at the Orange County Center for Contemporary Art on Saturday, Nov. 2, for Alta-photog Jane Szabo.  Szabo is appearing in the show “Compass: Navigating the Journey to Self Identity” at the gallery, 117 N. Sycamore in Santa Ana.  The reception will be from 6-10 PM.

Pasadena Senior Center salutes veterans Nov. 11

Every year Pasadena says thank you to America’s veterans, salutes their service, honors their sacrifice and promises their dedication to our nation will never be forgotten.  

The annual Veterans Day commemoration in front of Pasadena City Hall will begin at 10AM Monday, Nov. 11, and will end with a flyover by the Condor Squadron of World War II-era planes at 11:11 a.m.

At 11:30 a.m. the salute to veterans will continue when everyone is invited to the Pasadena Senior Center, 85 E. Holly St., where hot dogs, salads and cherry cobbler will be served. Entertainment will be provided by The Bob and Bernie Show.

Prepaid reservations must be made at the Pasadena Senior Center front desk no later than Thursday, Nov. 7. The cost is $5 for members and $7 for non-members.

Land Use Committee November meeting cancelled

Land Use Committee chair Ken Roberts said that the monthly meeting of the committee, scheduled for Nov. 5, has been cancelled, but will resume next month:

We have only one action item to be heard, which is the continuation of the hearing’s for the CUP Request for the 3085 Ridgeview property, asking for an approval “to increase the number of inpatient housing accommodations (beds) from six (6) to ten (10) in an existing care facility” to accommodate desperately needed medicinal services already being provided.

Sheriff shares Halloween safety tips

Halloween doesn’t have to be scary if you practice basic, common-sense safety. Fun times and happy memories can still be made if you follow a few simple steps. Tips for young and old to enjoy the holiday can be as easy to remember as:

• Hold a flashlight while trick-or-treating to help you see and others to see you.
• Avoid trick-or-treating alone. Walk with a group.
• Party safely. Don’t drink and drive. Get a ride home from a sober friend or a taxi.
• Prepare for chilly weather while trick-or-treating by warm piece of clothing.
• Wear clothing that’s easy to see at night while trick-or-treating, like yellow or something light-colored or reflective.
• Have a cellphone with you while trick-or-treating, in case of emergency.
• Always keep a safe distance from candles or other fire sources. Dress in fire proof costumes or treated with a fire retardant.
• Look both ways before crossing any streets, especially if trick-or-treating at night.
• Location. Know where you’ve parked or walked to avoid getting lost, especially if in an unfamiliar neighborhood. If your kids are going alone, know their route before they leave. Have them check in regularly by phone and give their current location.
• Obey all laws, good manners and curfews.
• Walk on sidewalks, wherever available. To avoid traffic accidents, do not run from house to house or dash into the street.
• Eat only factory-wrapped treats from people you know and trust. Note the address from which each treat was received.
• Examine all treats for tampering, choking hazards and allergens.
• Never enter a stranger’s home or vehicle while trick-or-treating. Teach kids not to engage strangers if they go trick-or-treat alone.

Have an enjoyable time celebrating Halloween, but remember to still be cautious of your surroundings. If you see something, say something.

Edison warns of cash card/debit card phone scams

Southern California Edison (SCE) is advising customers to be aware of a telephone scam that demands immediate payment for allegedly past due electricity bills.

Imposters have been calling SCE customers telling them they must make immediate payment on past due bills or have their electric service disconnected. The callers are also demanding that payment be made through a prepaid cash card. Other forms of fraud involve customers being asked to purchase prepaid debit cards. Scammers ask for the debit card number and collect the value deposited on the card.

SCE customers have reported about 800 instances of phone scams this year. About 150 residential and commercial customers have been victimized by some form of bill scam with the incidents costing them an average of $800 to $1,000.

“We ask our customers to be alert to these calls that demand immediate payment and threaten service disconnection,” said Marlyn Denter, SCE consumer affairs manager. “Customers suspecting a fraudulent call should ask for the caller’s name, department and business phone number. If the caller refuses to provide this information, customers should terminate the call and report the incident immediately to local police or SCE at 800-655-4555.”

Boo-tiful Halloween activities all this week

It's Halloween week, and here in Altadena, there's lots to do from now until Saturday:

Tues., Oct. 29

The Altadena Main Library, 600 E. Mariposa St. , will host its annual family Halloween and Día de los Muertos Celebration at 4 PM. Día de los Muertos / Day of the Dead is a traditional Mexican holiday when family and friends gather to honor and remember loved ones. Halloween and Day of the Dead activities include construction paper jack o’ lanterns, puppets, Mexican paper flowers, and sugar-skull decorating. Fun for the whole family.  Admission is free.

Wed., Oct. 30

Loma Alta Park will have a costume contest, coloring contest, Halloween-themed carnival games, and of course candy on Halloween eve, Wed., Oct. 30.  Aimed at the 13 and younger set, the festivities run from 5-7 PM.  On Halloween, there won't be any activities, but there will be candy.

Charles White Park will have a haunted house on Wednesday and Thursday, from 5-7 PM.  Aimed at the younger set, but of course all ages are welcome to the haunted house.

Wear your costumes to the Altadena Farmer's Market today, just for fun, from 3-7 PM, 600 W. Palm Street. UPDATE: Stephanie Pinto, aka Calicachica (Skull Girl) will be back with sugar skulls for your Dia de los Muertos pleasure.

WIcked Lit wraps up its 2013 immersive theater scare-a-thon at Mountain View Mausoleum and Cemetery with performances Wednesday through Saturday.  Performances are sold out on all days, but you can still get on the standby list in case something, you know, unfortunate happens to another theatergoer.  Go here to get on standby. 

Thurs., Oct. 31: Halloween

Farnsworth Park will have a haunted house at the Davies Building from 6-9:30 PM, with candy.

Charles White Park's haunted house will also be open, from 5-7 PM.

Webster's Fine Stationers, 2450 N. Lake Avenue, will hold the drawing for its coloring contest.  Pick up a coloring sheet beforehand, color it in, and return it to the store to be displayed.  They all go into the hat for a drawing.

For grownups, the Altadena Ale & Wine House, 2329 N. Fair Oaks Avenue, will have a Halloween costume contest and party from 7 PM onward. Gail Casburn says: "We will have drink specials on Hobgoblin, Scarecrow, and Wychcraft beers as well as a couple of wines. We are also having a potluck, so please bring your favorite dish. Prizes will be given out to the best costumes in various categories."

 

 

Dance the night away at the Altadena Farmers' Market Wednesday

Wednesday is the day before Halloween, so why not test-drive your costume ideas at the Altadena Farmers' Market tomorrow?

And while you're at it, dance the night away:  The Connected Dancer will be holding their Autumn Harvest Dance right at the Farmer's Market.  There will be free dance lessons, performances, costume parade and contest, and dancing in the grass. Celebrate the autumn harvest and swing around your favorite partner! Absolutely free - all ages and feet welcome!

In the food realm, market manager Joseph Shuldiner tells us:

Our friends at Common Loon Kitchen & Grocery have made a hot sauce sourced mostly from the Altadena Farmers' Market. We have peppers at Ellwood Canyon Farms, apples at Ha's Apple Farm, and Etheridge Canyon Farm, and onion, garlic and carrots from Moua Farm. Peppers are going out of season soon so be sure to stock up for pickling and drying. Apples, carrots, onion, and garlic can be used together in a number of variations. But a coleslaw or pureed soup come to mind. 

The Altadena Farmers' Market will be from 3-7 PM Wednesday, Oct. 30, at Loma Alta Park, 600 W. Palm Street.

Concert to benefit Arroyo Food Co-op Nov. 8

There will be a special concert to benefit the Arroyo Food Co-op on Friday, Nov. 8 at the Shed, 1355 Lincoln Avenue, Pasadena.

Performers will be local musicians The Licata Brothers and the ThorinBirds.  Doors open at 6 PM for refreshment under the stars, and the music starts at 7:30 PM

A duo comprised of Duane Thorin and Lina Bird, the ThorinBirds will share an eclectic mix of Celtic, old time, and American standards. With Lina Bird on flute and and 5-string banjo and Duane Thorin on guitar and vocals, the duo alternates well known popular songs with lively instrumentals.

Opening for the ThorinBirds are Jimmy and Tony Licata, who will welcome us with their renditions of classic folk and pop songs from the 50s and 60s.

Tickets are $30, and available through Brown Paper TIckets here.  TIckets will also be sold at the door (cash or check only, please). Street parking available; we encourage you to carpool, bike, and or take public transit.

If you are already a member of the Co-op, proceeds from your ticket purchase will go toward your membership dues. If you are fully invested, proceeds will be donated toward the opening of the store.

Guitar prodigy to perform at Library's "Taste of Spain" Nov. 1

Although only thirteen years old, classical Spanish guitarist Olivia Chang has already received several awards including one from the White House! What’s her secret?  Well, her father, James Chiang, is also a classical guitarist and instructor and has been tutoring her since she was seven.  Olivia has performed at several venues throughout the Southland.  On November 1 at 7 p.m. she will play several Spanish favorites as part of Altadena Library’s celebration “A Taste of Spain.”  This event will also include flamenco dance by Jessica Pacheco and a talk by restaurant critic and food historian Richard Foss on the history of traditional food of Spain. This program is suitable for families with older children.  Light Spanish refreshments will be served.

Olivia has performed in a Cadet Band at Winter Wassail Concert at Walnut High School from Suzanne Middle High School where she is a straight A student and received the President’s Education Award from the White House from President Obama. Olivia participated in a Classical Guitar Masterclass with Christopher Parkening in 2010 and Rolan Dyens in 2011. She is also a finalist in the  National Solo Competition of American Strings Teachers Association, 2013 and the third place winner of Sierra Nevada Guitar Competition, 2011. She has been performing at 7^th Annual LMU Guitar Festival, Yorba Linda Public Library, American Guitar Society, Guitar Solo International (GSI), Orange County Guitar Circle and The Fret House. Under the teaching of her father, she has passed the Grade 8 Exam and is a qualified applicant for the Music Diploma from The Associate Board of Royal School of Music (ABRSM), London, England. Breaking: Crash on Marengo [UPDATED]

A towtruck is positioned to tow a truck away from a power pole on the 2600 block of Marengo Monday afternoon. Another truck, not pictured, has a bashed up front end, and CHP is on scene.

UPDATE: Apparently community correspondent Tim Murphy saw the whole thing:

I spotted this accident scene at 2639 North Marengo today at 1:25 PM. The driver of the Toyota Tacoma truck was taken away by paramedics. I didn't witness the accident but it appeared that the driver of the Conejo Crest Landscape Maintenance truck rear-ended the Toyota. The home owners lost a section of a freshly built masonry wall. When I left, the driver of the Conejo truck was taking pictures of the accident with his iPhone. If in fact he was at fault, the photos should be tilted....."oops, sorry boss!"

As the rain moves in this week, Altadenans enjoyed spending some time outdoors in the autumn warmth.

Cody Howard wrangled up a crew of volunteers on his birthday to help him weed and replant his "guerilla garden" on Altadena Drive near the President Streets neighborhood.  Howard, a horticulturalist with the Huntington Museum and Gardens, mounted a major drive to make improvements to the desert garden he surreptitiously planted on a dirt stretch next to a soundwall.  One of the volunteers, Karen Zimmerman, who works with Howard at the Huntington, said that this was a pretty ambitious garden -- whereas most guerilla gardens occupy a small patch of ground, Howard's runs a tenth of a mile.  Howard's garden won a "Golden Poppy" award from Altadena Heritage last year. Judy Pastor is ready to turn her yard into a hellpit for the 14th year.

It's the Balian Mansion of Halloween: the haunted yard at 1640 Braeburn Road attracts more than 3.500 people.  Unlike Altadena's famous overdone Christmas lights, tho', the Braeburn Haunt attracts everybody on a single night: Halloween.

And getting there is no easy task.

Judy Pastor and her husband Vance Weisbach have been putting this together for 14 years now.  On a recent afternoon, Pastor is supervising some family members and other volunteers, fine-tuning the effects and the height of the many things that hang as part of the display.

There are effigies, dead bodies, zombies, and monsters all over the place.  Creatures and unfortunate souls dangle from every tree.  Anybody who dares go through the front gate will see creatures, inflatable displays, doorways, coffins, and even a real hearse.  Those who survive have to go through a tunnel of darkness to find their way back to the land of the living.

The horror within is stored in plastic boxes most of the year.

All of these things Pastor and Weisbach keep in their attic and garage storage 11 months out of the year.  In October, the assembly starts, with the help of many volunteers.  On Halloween night, the horde descends.  Pastor says that Supervisor Michael D. Antonovich has helped them to close off the street, with the California Highway Patrol standing watch to make sure the horror goes on in an orderly manner.

Pastor demurs giving a figure on how much they've sunk into their display, but does offer that Weisbach spent $1,000 the day before to stock up on candy for the event.

The haunting starts as Halloween night descends, and goes on until 10 PM, when it must stop.  But the job isn't over yet -- by the time the sun comes up, it's pretty much all been put away for another year, as ephemeral as a Halloween ghost.

Ten year old Altadena boy reported missing, later found at Best Buy

The Altadena searcha and rescue team was called out to find a missing ten year old boy Sunday, but the boy was later found uninjured at the Pasadena Best Buy.

According to a press release from the Altadena Sheriff Station, the boy's mother called the station to report that the boy had left this house Sunday morning without permission and did not come home.  The release says that Altadena deputies, along with search and rescue, Crescenta Valley deputies, and the Air 8 helicopter assisted in the search before the boy was found in Pasadena.

The boy was uninjured, the release says, but there's no information on how he got there.

 

Warm and calm at Art on Palm

The fall Art on Palm show was a good place to spend some time on a warm Saturday afternoon.  Artists and craftspeople offering their creative wares, serpentined among the tasteful rustic houses and the centuries-old oaks of Wildwood Park.

 

Mary Jane Elgin, Catherine Cowles, and Mark Pickett organize this art show in their neighborhood.

Clustered around the Valentine Cottage (by architect Henry Green, of Green & Green fame), there was something for every artistic taste and decorative need, from jewelry to paintings and steampunk brass lights.

 

And it was all for a good cause: the event benefits the west LA Fisher House, which provides free or low-cost lodging for families of service members recovering in military hospitals.

The exhibit is a collection of intimate ink portraits on the cusp between fantasy and reality.

LA Children's Chorus fundraiser for Friends in Deed Nov. 14

The Los Angeles Children’s Chorus isn’t singing in the rain.  It’s singing to provide shelter from the rain and cold this winter for people in the San Gabriel Valley who are homeless and at risk and who need supportive services. The chorus is performing at a Friends In Deed benefit on Thursday, Nov. 14, at San Marino Community Church, 1750 Virginia Road, San Marino.

“Pasadena is a compassionate community,” says the Rev. Pat O’Reilly, executive director of Friends In Deed, “and we are hoping everyone will come together to help support our programs so desperately needed by families and individuals in our city.” An example of recent funding challenges is the loss of city and national funding for winter shelter programs, which means the Bad Weather Shelter cannot accommodate families this year.

Admission is $25 for adults, $15 for student. A silent auction and reception begins at 6 p.m. The concert is at 7 p.m.

 

Soroptimists silent auction at the Senior Center Nov. 3

The holiday season will be kicked off by the 18th Annual Silent Auction, presented by Soroptimists of Altadena /Pasadena on Sunday, November 3, 2013 from 1 to 3 p.m.  This Fiesta themed auction, the group’s major annual fundraiser, will be held at the Altadena Senior Center at 560 E. Mariposa, Altadena.

Original artwork, gift certificates for restaurants, theatre, spa dates, and wondrous gift baskets will be available for bidding to fulfill patron fantasies and gift list requirements. Delicious food and drinks will also be served.

Proceeds enable the Altadena/Pasadena Soroptimists to provide scholarships to deserving young women, awards to outstanding women and girls for their volunteer service, and support to non-profit agencies serving women and girls in the community.  Among the organizations that the group have assisted in recent years are Door of Hope, The Women’s Room, The Cancer Support Community/Silver Saturday (celebration of Breast Cancer Survivors) and Foothill Unity Center.

Weekend: Halloween warm-up and Art on Palm, Oct. 25-27

It's Halloween weekend (even tho' the event won't be until next Thursday), but the stores and parks are already in the mood.  If that's not your idea of a good time, there's Art on Palm at Wildwood Park, or maybe you can join the search and rescue team ... or do some guerilla gardening.  There's something for every taste this weekend and keep coming back as we add more!

Friday, Oct. 25

• Webster's Community Pharmacy opens up the spirit of the season with a "Haunted Halloween Hunt" Friday and Saturday.  Hunt for hidden treasures in return for prizes and special savings -- Meredith Miller at Webster's says "We're giving out some nice discounts and mystery gifts to the Treasure Hunters!  Of course there will be spooky snacks, and lots of Halloween goodies to stock up on.  Webster's Community Pharmacy is at 2450 N. Lake Avenue.
• Webster's Fine Stationers, meanwhile, is still holding a Halloween coloring contest -- grab an entry form at the store, color it in, and it will be on display thru the holiday, and you will be entered in a prize drawing on Halloween.
• Haunted House at Farnsworth Park Friday and Saturday at the Davies Building from 7-9:30 PM.  Yes, there will be candy.  And then, on Halloween (Thurs., Oct. 31) they will do it all again from 6-9:30 PM.

Altadena is dogtown I: Catching up with Rudy, who's still looking for a home

Rudy the rescued pooch is well-cared for, but still looking for a place to call his own.

There's been so much dog activity this week, we thought we'd catch up with the saga of Rudy.

We told the story of the the seven-year-old pitbull/Rhodesian ridgeback mix last spring and summer.  Rudy was an emaciated, worm-ridden sad sack dumped in the Chaney Trail neighborhood in May. Concerned neighbors managed to round him up and found he was loving and had a great personality.  He was reluctantly sent to the county's animal shelter at Baldwin Park, but with full confidence that such a handsome lad would be adopted out soon.

But that was not to be -- he was slated to be put down.  They bargained a few more days of life for him, and the combined action of two Altadena Bonnies -- Bonny Shumaker of the rescue group On Wings of Care, and Bonnie Barron, bailed him out in time.

Barron, who already has enough dogs at home, arranged for him to get medical care, neutering, and kenneled him.  Some of the expense comes out of her own pocket, and some of it comes from contributions to On Wings of Care.  In August, they were still looking for him to be fostered or adopted.

And that hasn't changed. Bonnie Shumaker says that Rudy continues to be in a cage-free kennel, and Bonnie Barron still takes him out every day.  He's gotten close to adoption, but they've always pulled out at the end.  Bonnie Barron writes;

 I've attached Rudy's latest flyer. He does great with kids as you can see from the photos from Altadena's Farmer's Market (we frequent every Wed.). He now weighs a healthy 75 lbs & just got a complete check-up with lab/urinalysis w/ bladder scan & everything came out perfect!  I usually take him to my backyard in the evening to romp around for an hour or two which he enjoys. He gets his routine massage (focus to hips) every night on his memory foam twin mattress before bed in a  small bedroom size private room with fan, radio, toys, water, etc. ... I plan to start going out to west side for rescue/adoption events since people there appear to be more amenable to Pit mixes.

Altadena is dogtown II: The tale of the terriers continues

Yes, there's yet more in the saga of the terriers.

 

This week, five terriers who may be members of the same family were captured.  One of a trio in the Chaney Trail neighborhood was captured almost immediately by Lori Paul and Rob Staehle.  The other two were rounded up after many efforts by the neighbors there.  Two more were rounded up near the intersection of Lake Avenue and Washington Boulevard. Speculation is that it is a mom dog and her four offspring who were dumped at Hahamongna Park, where some were spotted earlier in the week.

The first dog -- now named Milly -- has been adopted, and the rest should be ready to be placed in new homes by this weekend.

UPDATE:  Apparently Milly was named Tina by her new owner, so we'll go with that.  Either way, a good ending.
