We’re not going to deal with the reasons and substance behind the investigation until the council has presented them. However, Simmons has used the council’s silence to mischaracterize the investigation as an attempt to “railroad community programs,” in his own words.
In an Aug. 14 email (an edited version appears on his website), Simmons accuses councilmember Alice Wessen of “attacks upon me.” What are these “attacks?” She brought up to the council the possibility that Simmons may have violated ethics rules -- which was her duty as a councilmember -- and emailed Simmons a copy of the bylaws and ethical standards he signed off as receiving and understanding when he ran for office. Some attack.
First, it sends the Altadena town council back to the days when it apparently was run by circus clowns. The council has acquired a reputation over the years that has not been flattering: private agendas, unproven accusations, drama inside and outside of the council chambers, whispered (or sometimes shouted) conspiracy theories, egos run amok -- and just generally a feeling that adults were not in charge here. There is a reason why the meetings are broadcast, and not because they set a sterling example of how local government should work. The rough-and-tumble contrarian image some Altadenans take perverse pride in doesn’t travel well outside of town.
The present council, under Chairman Sund, has been working to turn that culture around, and has accomplished much. Altadena deserves to be taken seriously. The hysterical finger-pointing of Mr. Simmons and his amen corner on and off the council threatens to undo the progress that has been made and drag us back to the bad old days.

Altadena town councilmember Herbert Simmons, who has been under investigation by the council's ethics committee since his first month in office, has fired back against town council chair Gino Sund in his Altadenans website, demanding an investigation for various alleged infractions. The website also contains letters of complaint signed by councilman Okorie Ezieme and former councilmember Camille Dudley, who has added Tecumseh Shackelford and former councilman Ken Balder to her list of complaints. Apparently we can count on any town council action on the real issues of concern to the community to be relegated to the back burner in favor of settling scores now. Pity.

Reader Paul Ayers sent us this first-person account:
On Friday, my fourth grader James had the day off so we
decided to go hiking. After finding that Pasadena had closed the lower Arroyo
Seco we wandered over to Eaton because James wanted a walk by “a stream”. Out
of habit I swung by the Pinecrest gate and… found it opened; hikers were
parking and walking down to the falls, up the Toll Road, etc. James and I went
down the road and up to the falls and had a fine time; I have attached a photo
of James at the gate. That’s the good news.
The bad news is that no one, including a county fire fighter
I met at the gate, had any rational explanation as to when the gate openings
began, what the open hours were, etc. Most troubling was the fire fighter’s
statement that the gate was “unlocked by a neighbor who has a key”. And the
signage on the gates still says the City of Pasadena has no responsibility for
the gate and if it is locked when you’re inside, tough luck.
Pasadena Water & Power owns the land at the access point. That entity according to letters I have seen signed by Mayor Bogaard, was responsible for the closure. The closure was in many ways irrational. There was nothing particularly unsafe in Eaton after the rains stopped in 2005 and if safety was the issue [which Mayor Bogaard stated it was] why did access to the “unsafe area” from the Nature Center and other Eaton Canyon access points remain unfettered? Given the lack of logic of the City’s position it is no wonder that the trail community came to believe that safety was not the issue, but rather that the Pinecrest “neighbors” simply didn’t like the great unwashed in their neighborhood. This may not be the case but when a government spreads bullsh*t all kinds of plants grow.
Be that as it may, now that the repairs are completed and the Toll Road is passable and safe it seems reasonable that some kind of rational approach to access through the Pinecrest gate be established. In my opinion this would involve some accountable governmental entity controlling and scheduling gate openings, not the “neighbors”.

The great Station Fire raged through the San Gabriel Mountains for more than a month and came closer to destroying Mount Wilson Observatory than any event in that facility's 105-year history. The story of how this most historic of observatories was spared will no doubt become a major chapter in the history of astronomy.
Observatory Superintendent and astrophotographer Dave Jurasevich was on the mountain through the ordeal, and on Sunday, October 25, Dave will show and tell us exactly what it was like to be there. The talk will be generously illustrated with Dave's stunning on-the-scene photography (including many shots never seen before), plus video footage of the fire shot by him from Mt. Wilson.
This is a free talk, sponsored by the Mount Wilson Observatory Association (MWOA). The lecture begins at 2:30 p.m. at the Altadena Public Library, 600 E. Mariposa, Altadena. Refreshments will be served before the program, starting at 2:00 p.m. We suggest you come early to be assured of good seating.
For more information, call Bob Eklund, MWOA Program Chairman, at (310) 216-5947, or email him at beklund@sprynet.com.

We got back in town last night after a perfect weekend on Catalina (well, perfect except for the heavy lifting -- we were helping a friend make a rather large planter on his children's camp property), and are happy to be back in drizzly Altadena. Expect updates throughout the day.
UPDATE: Someone on the newsgroups has reported seeing a naked man jogging about Fair Oaks and Marathon on the morning of Oct. 11. It's great to be back home!

For those who don't know, a "bleg" is a beg on a blog. This time, we're looking for good Halloween displays.
Do you have or know of a great Halloween display? Let us know and we'll try to get a picture of it (and yes, we know about the Horror House on Braeburn -- but there's got to be more out there!)

(Pictured: employee David May, 60, who helps clean the restrooms, stalls, and other areas)
Danny's Farm is familiar to children, teachers, and parents throughout Altadena -- a chance for children to encounter real farm animals in a safe and sane setting. But besides, that, its mission is to provide meaningful jobs for developmentally disabled adults, who handle the maintenance and care tasks involved in running such a facility.
Cathy and her husband, former Dodger pitcher Jim Gott, have two sons with autism, CJ and Danny. They opened Education Spectrum, an educational program for autistic children, in 1997. The farm, which is a nonprofit foundation started in 2007, was an outgrowth of Danny's love of animals, and the fact that he was getting older.
"There is little opportunity [for the developmentally disabled] to get jobs," Cathy said. With help from the San Gabriel-Pomona Regional Center, Villa Esperanza, and Supv. Michael Antonovich, they stated Danny's Farm with the goal of it being self-supporting by the time Danny turned 18.
(Pictured: Reynard Franklin, 20, likes to help out with the goats)
Due to zoning issues, Danny's Farm has had to cut back on the kinds of farm animals onsite, and that meant the birthday parties and school field trips that were its mainstay are gone, too. It still offers a Regional Center-vendored specialty autism program for after school hours, and it will "bring the farm to you," with their mobile petting farm. But they have plans to make it even better. (See this story about their future plans). The mobile petting farm is licensed and insured, and will go to schools, block parties, or other events. The price is flexible, depending on distance and the animals they bring with them.
Danny's Farm employs office manager Jenny Sukys and program director Lisa Houseman. Most other paid employees, who come through Villa Esperanza Employment Services, have developmental disabilities.
(PIctured: Alex Reeser, 21, helps look after the bunnies at his first real job.)
Volunteering at Danny's Farm also represents an opportunity for students who need to put in community service hours for school -- "come pet the animals, brush them, bath them " -- or take on other tasks, such as making curtains.
Gott also credits contribution of Altadena Stables, next door, which owns the land and rents it to Danny's Farm. "They not only allowed it, they empowered us, they supported us -- it's pretty extraordinary."Posted on Friday, October 16, 2009 at 05:33 AM | Permalink | Comments (2) | TrackBack (0)

The two suspects were arrested by Altadena Station Detectives, in the early morning hours, during a burglary surveillance operation.Yesterday, October 14, 2009, at about 4:45 PM, a female resident came home and interrupted a male burglarizing her home in the 1300 block Eastlyn Place. The suspect fled, and Altadena Station personnel immediately responded. Property and evidence were recovered, and information developed that lead to the identity of Suspect Jabari Vanardo.
Throughout the evening hours, Altadena Station Detectives conducted a surveillance operation, which resulted in his arrest. Also arrested, was Suspect Lonell Vanardo, father of Suspect Jabari Vanardo. The elder Vanardo has a prior burglary conviction, and had a firearm in his possession at the time of his arrest.
Detectives will evaluate investigative leads to determine whether or not these suspects are related to any of the recent Altadena area burglaries that have been reported and received extensive media and community attention.

This hit the newsgroups about 12:20 PM today to the President Streets newsgroup:
About 20 minutes ago had a "front door bell, go around to the back" incident again. 5'10" hispanic, mustache, blue jeans & shirt, tool belt. Rang the front door emphatically a couple of minutes. Then he came around back and went directly past back door to side of house. The lawn maintenance guys were here. I asked them to get the guy that went to the side (thought he might be electric meter reader). This guy said he was with A-1 Air conditioning and did I need any repair. I said the air conditioning unit was out front and he probably saw it while ringing front door and coming around to back. I told him to get out. The sheriffs have been by and are checking the street.
Please call the sheriffs (798-1131) if you see anything useful.

Faithful reader Devon Pettengill sent us this useful note:
I did a little internet research to find more information about the debris flow, flash flood, and mudslide risks Altadena may be facing this week. Here are a few of the links I came up with:
First, here is the online version of a booklet prepared by the LA County Department of Public Works, entitled "Homeowner's Guide for Flood, Debris, and Erosion Control." I found this in the Current Conditions section of LACounty.gov's C.A.R.E. website (http://dpw.lacounty.gov/care/), which offers resources for LA County residents affected by the recent fires. The homeowner's booklet has a lot of good information such as how to properly fill and use sandbags to deflect debris flows and flooding. There is a lot of detailed information about how to create permanent defenses against debris flows, though hopefully such substantial fortifications won't be necessary for any of us!
http://dpw.lacounty.gov/wmd/HomeOwners/enter.cfm
Second is a PDF document listing the locations where people living in the unincorporated areas of LA County can obtain sandbags. I'm not sure if the sandbags are free, but it is possible that they are.
http://dpw.lacounty.gov/wrd/fire/file/sandbags.pdf
(Ed: we've gone ahead and published the Station Fire sandbag locations)
Lastly, for the scientifically curious, is a report from the US Geological Survey about debris flows in recent burn areas in Southern California. The report includes the why, where, and how about debris flows in burn areas, as well as a page of safety and preparedness information about what to do before and during a heavy rain storm.
http://pubs.usgs.gov/fs/2005/3106/pdf/FS-3106.pdf
I hope your readers will find this information as useful as I did! Keep up the great work!

Robert Klomburg sends us this:
I don't want to be an alarmist, but we could see the first significant rain of the season in October! This Tuesday night! How strange is that!
You may wish to point your readers to: http://www.myfoxla.com/dpp/weather/Heavy_Rain_Forecast_ Fire_Scarred_Mountains_ 20091010 And from Weather Underground: http://www.wunderground.com/US/CA/548.html#SPE The County has had very little time to prepare for an event like this. Those in La Vina and the Meadows could experience significant mudslides and debris flows. If this storm develops as expected, we could be in for a heck of an event.I strongly encourage all Altadena residents to keep up-to-date on the approaching storm. Visit: www.weatherunderground.com and www.noaa.gov for the latest information. Now is the time to prepare!Bob
And on a similar note, Whittier Daily News (poor cousin to PSN and SGVN) has an Emma Gallegos story about how La Canada-Flintridge is preparing for potential mudslides.

Lots of good energy and high spirits filled the Loma Alta Park gym as students attended Black College Night Thursday. The night was an opportunity for students to meet students and alums of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs).
Penny Daniels of the Loma Alta Park staff, who helped organize the event, received a certificate from the county board of supervisors.
Among the attractions were demonstrations of "steppin," an HBCU tradition.

Parents and kids gathered in the Altadena Library Thursday afternoon to "Read for the Record" -- joining readers around the country reading the same book on the same day. This year it was Eric Carle's classic The Very Hungry Caterpillar, read by librarian Cassandra Stearns, which, even after 40 years in print, has the power to enchant. Readers also received a special edition of the book.

From Alice Wessen, moderator of the Chaney Trail listserv:
Chaney
Trail listserve reports that there have been separate recent sightings
of both the hunter known as “Rambro” a middle age, black male driving a
maroon van, and another hunter, matching the following description:
white male, husky build in camo-gear, with a backpack, wearing a large
hunting knife.
On a lighter note: we found this story about hunters in the SoCal hills -- and never (except when we were a candidate to edit an electronics engineering magazine) had we less idea of what they're talking about, starting with the subhead! The male wearing camo-gear was driving a white truck has been seen at other trailheads. He also had a large grey dog with him (appeared to be a pitbull, on leash) and was driving a white Chevy Silverado pick-up truck (CA lic. plate 7P29732) parked at the Sunset Ridge / Mount Wilson Fire Road trailhead (top of Chaney Trail). A man in camo-gear, was wearing a backpack, wearing a large hunting knife got out of the truck.
The vehicle has been seen there before by Lonnie, campground host of Millard Campground. The truck is covered with US Marine Corps decals and bumper stickers on the back window area that read: Body Piercing by the USMC(next to a human silhouette full of bullet holes) and I'll keep my guns, freedom & money...You can keep the "change"
Sheriffs and USFS have been notified
Please do not approach! When Lonnie informed the man courteously that the Forest was closed and asked him if he'd seen all the signs. The man replied, "I've seen every F*cking one of them!" He then put his hand on his knife and Lonnie thought it wise to withdraw at that point.
If you see any vehicles where they don't belong, or suspicious persons in the burn area or on surrounding trails, particularly if they are obviously armed, please contact the Altadena Sheriffs immediately at: 626.798.1131.
