Chanel Boutakidis, Pasadena Mental Health Center Executive Director and Director of Permanency Programs at Five Acres, wants to tell us of their upcoming fundraiser:
For the past two years we have started an annual Rummage Sale Event at Pasadena Mental Health Center. The sale of all the items benefits the families we serve. Last year we had many community members come out and leave with bags of clothes, toys and books for their family. This event is worked by the actual staff and board members of our organization and is A LOT of fun.

Per the Altadena Sheriff station, the rescue squad is getting a workout tonight.
Altadena Search and Rescue successfully brought down two hikers earlier tonight from the Millard Canyon/Chaney Trail area, who were caught without flashlights as it got dark.
And, about 10 PM, the watch commander tells us that they're preparing for a rescue of a hiker in Eaton Canyon who has not returned. Pasadena PD is also involved, but not many details at this time.

Thank you to our West Side readers for alerting us to helicopter/sheriff activity last night around 10 PM. Sheriffs said it was a call on a burglary that amounted to nothing, but we're not sure we buy that from Crescenta Valley Station. We'll keep looking into it.

Yes, it's sunny and 70 degrees at about noon, but that's what the National Weather Service is saying: the wind is going to bring clouds overnight and a 30% chance of precipitation starting late this afternoon. Just warning you now!

Received a press release from Pasadena Public Information Officer Ann Erdman about an upcoming workshop Nov. 9 on the city's resource plan, which we are passing on as many Altadena residents are served by Pasadena Water & Power:
PASADENA COMMUNITY INVITED TO NOV. 9 WORKSHOP ON CRITICAL WATER RESOURCE PLAN
With so much concern about current shortfalls in the water supply and predictions of long-term drought, Pasadena Water and Power is preparing to craft its most comprehensive water resource plan to date.
The Water Integrated Resource Plan will be Pasadena’s blueprint for ensuring a reliable, cost-effective and environmentally responsible water supply for next 25 years. The WIRP takes into consideration available and alternative supplies, demand forecasts, climate change and conservation.
During a third community workshop Tuesday, Nov. 9, at 6:30 p.m. in the council chamber at Pasadena City Hall, a consulting firm working with PWP and an advisory group of local citizens will present the draft document that emphasizes aggressive conservation, incorporates all previous comments and describes the framework for future investment in water supply and conservation programs. Workshop participants will have an opportunity to provide input on the draft plan.
The Municipal Services Committee and the Environmental Advisory Commission will hold public meetings on the WIRP as the plan is finalized and before it goes to the Pasadena City Council for approval.
For more information visit www.cityofpasadena.net/waterplan or call (626) 744-6970.

It's good to look to the past for clues as to why things are the way they are, although it's important to be careful not to assume direct linkages or legacies, because new, unrelated elements often arrive with their own power — the power of change.
Historical imagination is, however, critical in deciphering past events and periods. Not imagination as in “making stuff up,” but in using facts from the record to place yourself in different times, and to empathize with people alive before you. I will admit to having a hyperactive historical imagination that on occasion leaps from the archives to full-scale fantasy.
A photo of a Pacific Electric “dinky car” once catapulted me into the streetcar heading east on Mariposa Street — feeling the press of the wicker-weave seat on my arm, and the BUMP! as the car traversed the spot where the street jogs, near present-day Waldorf School.
Hmmm. . . at Lake Avenue, shall I stop in for tea at La Mariposa Hotel? Or, how about hopping a Mt. Lowe car, and going two stops to the Incline in Rubio Canyon? Sited where the canyon narrows into a deep-walled gorge, Rubio Pavilion (ticket booth, hotel, snack bar, dining hall with open air dance floor above) bridges the canyon floor. Wooden walkways and staircases built into the rocky walls meander damply up from here to a grotto of giant ferns fed on mist from several waterfalls. I like to go there at early dusk when the Japanese lanterns turn on, mingling electric glow with the day’s last light.
The point of the above reverie is not to sink readers into nostalgia, but to encourage the use of some imagination among residents and would-be planners in visioning possible future Altadenas — by considering its past. Altadena’s checkered commercial history is instructive in light of the current discussion about what we want of our community.

Experienced blogger, teacher, and full-time freelance journalist Anne Louise Bannon, will present a lively workshop useful for both beginners and experienced bloggers in a free workshop: "Blogging from Beginning to Beyond for Fun and (Hopefully) Profit" on Tues., Nov. 16 at the Community Room of the Altadena Library, 600 E. Mariposa, at 7 PM.
Bannon will help you find the answer such questions as “What is blogging?” “Why do it?” “How do I create content?” and “How can I make it pay?”
Blogging seems to be gathering more and more momentum. Some bloggers may see their work as a fun technological adventure. Others hope to publicize themselves, their organizations, or small businesses. Blogs can also be utilized as a way to discuss issues, present valuable information, or serve as a diary or record of events, thoughts, writings, etc. Many may hope to provide a service which might eventually net them a steady stream of income, perhaps enough to give up their day job, or become the basis of a best-selling book.
Bannon manages several blogs including Your Family Viewer (http://yourfamilyviewer.com), which reviews television shows for families; The Oddball Grape (http://oddballgrape.com), a blog about tasting wines, wineries, the people who make wine, and the lifestyle that goes with it; and White House Rhapsody (http://whitehouserhapsody.com), a romance fiction blog that takes place in the White House.

The Altadena Town Council and Chamber of Commerce are sending out a letter to merchants and property owners along the Lake Ave. business district this week, warning them that the county inspectors may be coming.
According to council chair Gino Sund, the county Department of Regional Planning may be starting an enforcement effort soon to ensure that signage along the commercial corridor is up to code. The letter is an attempt to give the merchants the "head's up" that the county may be on its way.
Unfortunately, Sund said, many people think that it is the town council itself that started the enforcement action, and that's not the case.

The sheriff's Montrose Search and Rescue Team found and choppered out an Anaheim man on Monday who had gotten lost in the Angeles National Forest over the weekend.
Scott Gossard was extracted by the Air Rescue 5 chopper after rescue team members found him in a rocky and icy area between Twin Peaks and Triplet Rocks. Gossard had left for a weekend hiking trip Thursday night, expecting to return Saturday. He was reported missing by his mother Monday. His vehicle was located at about 8 AM Monday morning.
According to a sheriff's department press release, after being unable to find him by helicopter alone, Air 5 dropped two rescue team members down on a line from the helicopter into the difficult terrain. The team members spotted Gossard and began verbal communication with him, and Gossard and the rescue team members were extracted by helicopter.
According to the press release, "Gossard told the rescue team he lost his map, became disoriented, and could not find his way out of the area. His supply of drinking water became low, so he fed on snow to hydrate himself. Fortunately, he was not injured and was able to drive himself home."
“What most likely saved his life, was that he is an experienced hiker and knew the importance of informing his family of when he intended to return, and very specifically where he would be hiking,” said Sheriff’s Reserve Chief Mike Leum.
UPDATE: So how did they track him?
"The deputies knew what the soles of his climber’s boots looked like, because his family had emailed photos of the boots to the Sheriff’s Department (pictured). They had retained the pictures of the boots because he is a frequent hiker and they were concerned that one day he might be missing during a hike."

Block Captain LaCorona-Palm St
Upside-Down T Neighborhood Association
For more than 40 years the 50 houses in the LaCorona-Palm St Upside-Down T Neighborhood Association have kept the fun of the “old” Halloween alive. This year was no different.
Neighbors Peggy Trottman and Danielle Romo canvassed the neighborhood north of Altadena Drive and West of Fair Oaks asking which neighbors would be home and giving out candy Sunday night. A map was then made with a small orange pumpkin identifying each household that had agreed to distribute candy, allowing neighbors to spend an hour walking their kids around the T to yell “trick or treat” and be rewarded with bags of candy.
One new neighbor, Austin Dubina, an industrial manufacturing engineer, integrated a Tesla Coil (pictured, a high capacity electrical transformer) into an electric light and music show to entertain, and sometimes scare, the kids as they walked door to door.
Want to see the fun? Go to http://gallery.me.com/shirleygld#100104 to see a slide show of a night on the T.
