The Altadena Chamber of Commerce has released its latest coupons from Altadena-area businesses.
Participating businesses and groups include Webster's Community Pharmacy, the Friends of the Library, Steve's Dog Laundry, BITS Computer Services, and Bonnie B's Smokin' BBQ Heaven. There's also an opportunity to purchase old Altadena street signs from the Chamber.

The bobcats are out in Altadena this weekend.
Community correspondant Jeff Sedlik writes Saturday:
We had a visit from a bobcat this morning at our home on Braeburn between Page and Porter. 3:45am, our chickens went crazy, the bobcat was hanging off of the chicken wire on their coop, clawing at the chickens, trying to get in. Fortunately all of our hens are alive and well. In the photos you can see the pine shavings from our coop on his face. He was 21" tall. Bobcats are nocturnal but also hunt at dawn and dusk. Chickens are a favorite prey, but they don't hesitate to hunt cats, dogs of any size, and deer as well. Bobcats typically kill with one bite. This cat jumped over our six foot high fence like it was six inches high. Bobcats can clear a ten foot fence without touching it. There have been previous sightings of this cat hunting in the neighborhood. Area residents should take notice and keep their dogs and cats indoors at night.

It's almost October, and yet this long stretch of high temperatures isn't over yet.
The National Weather Service predicts temperatures in the 100's on Monday and Tuesday, Oct. 1-2. The Los Angeles County Health Oficer has issued some guidelines for coping, especially for older adults, caretakers of infants, and children, people sensitive to the heat, and those who are working or playing outdoors.
“Everyone should remember to take special care of themselves, children, the elderly, and their pets. When temperatures are high, prolonged sun exposure may cause dehydration, heat cramps, heat exhaustion, and heat stroke,” said Jonathan E. Fielding, MD, MPH, Director of Public Health and Health Officer. “Never leave children, elderly people, or pets unattended in vehicles, even with the windows ‘cracked’ or open, as temperatures inside can quickly rise to life-threatening levels.”
Locally, the nearest cooling centers are the Altadena Senior Center, 560 E. Mariposa St., open from 8 AM-5 PM Monday through Friday; the Pasadena Senior Center, 85 W. Holly St., Pasadena, from 8:30 AM-4:30 PM. The Altadena Main Library, 600 E. Mariposa St. , is also a good place to while away the hot hours.

Public school officials said they will protect academic advances even as they warned of a looming financial crisis at the annual State of the Schools address on Friday at Blair Middle School.
Pasadena Board of Education President Renatta Cooper and Supt. Jon Gundry told a crowd of more than 50 parents and educators that cash-strapped public schools will be dealt a heavy blow if voters fail to pass a state tax increase in November.
The school district would face a $5-million cut this school year and would lose $12.8 million next year if both Gov.Jerry Brown’s Proposition 30 and Pasadena attorney Molly Munger’s Proposition 38 fail, officials said.
“There’s no way [to make cuts] without causing a great deal of pain in the district,” said Cooper, who predicted larger class sizes and a shortened school year if voters reject both proposed tax increases.

Today is Prescription Drug Take-Back Day, Saturday, September 29. It's a good time to get rid of expired, unneeded, or unwanted prescription drugs in a safe manner.
The Altadena Sheriff Station, 780 E. Altadena Drive, has a collection box for prescription drugs (it looks like a mailbox), and a separate one for disposal of illegal drugs. The collection boxes are open 24/7 for discreet disposal, no questions asked.
Americans participating in DEA’s four previous Take-Back Days turned in nearly 1.6 million pounds—almost 774 tons—of prescription drugs, most recently at almost 5,700 sites operated by nearly 4,300 of the DEA’s local law enforcement partners. DEA’s last event collected more than double the pills as their first event two years ago, with almost 50% more participating agencies and sites this past April than in September of 2010.

Intermediatel Victory Garden classes are starting up soon at the Altadena Community Garden.
Part of the University of California's Cooperative Extension Master Gardener Program, you can become a certified UC Victory Gardener through this four week program.

We've been sweet-talked into being a sponsor for the Altadena birthday celebration at Farnsworth Park on Nov. 3, and we want to do an historical display on natural disasters in the area.
Naturally, we'll focus on the Station Fire of 2009 and the Windstorm of 2011. But we're interested, too, in how Altadena fared with other natural disasters (such as the Northridge Quake of 1994 and the Altadena fire of 1993).
So we're trolling for pictures of Altadena in the aftermath of all these and other disasters that you may have in your collection. We have some, of course, but we're looking for pictures that you may want to share.
The chosen pictures (properly credited, of course) will be part of the display we are preparing for the celebration. Altadenans are survivors, and we want to celebrate that!

John W. Reischl, director of development for The Olson Company of Seal Beach, confirmed that the property was in escrow, but couldn't say much more than that at this point.
"There's really not a lot to say," Reischl said. "We're very early on in the process."
Reischl said that they were aware of the problems the property has caused in the past, and they were spending time talking to the neighbors before beginning planning steps.
The property -- classroom-type buildings, office space, and a villa -- most recently belonged to Philip Clarke, president of the Arroyo Pacific Academy, which was trying to put a satellite campus on the site. Clarke's bid was turned down twice by the Altadena Town Council and by the county Planning Commission in the face of strong opposition by neighborhood residents. Previously, the property belonged to the Sahag Mesrob Armenian Christian School, which opened a campus without acquiring the proper permits in 2008. That school was shut down at the end of the school year in 2009.
The property -- an institutional complex inside a residential neighborhood -- also served as a home and school for abused and troubled children, and as a YMCA camp.
The Olson Company describes itself as "a leader in providing affordable urban housing throughout California." Many of their projects are named "Walks," which exist inside urban areas close to jobs and shopping. Locally, the company developed Heritage Walk at East Walnut Street and El Molino Avenue in Pasadena, and Village Walk in Claremont. The company also touts its LEED, green, and sustainable building designs.

The Altadena Sheriff Station reports no new information nor suspects in a disturbance at a liquor store on Lincoln Avenue Friday night.
According to Lt. Michael White of the Altadena Sheriff's Station, numerous squad cars and a helicopter reponded to reports of a shot fired in the area on the 2400 block of Lincoln Avenue,at about 10:20 PM Friday, Sept. 21. Numerous men were involved in a fight at that location, White wrote to us in an email, but "Ultimately there were no arrest and the source of the shot was not identified."

There will be a free e-waste and clothing drop-off event on Sat., Oct. 13 at Loma Alta Park upper parking lot, from 9 AM-2 PM.

Children ages 4-12 who check out and read five library books during that period will receie a certificate for a free hamburger, cheeseburger, or grilled cheese sandwich at In-N-Out Burger.

Dr. Barry F. Madore will speak Saturday afternoon on "Cognitive Astrophysics and Pentessence, the Fifth State of Matter" in the Friends of the Mt. Wilson Observatory's monthly talk on Sat., Sept. 29, starting at 2:30 PM at the Altadena Main Library, 600 E. Mariposa St. .
Madore will "introduce a synthesiss of recent studies into how we think, how we express those thoughts, and ultimately how we see and model the universe, drawing heavily from recent findings in the cognitive sciences, linguistics, computer science, astrophysics, cosmology, and philosophy. The program begins with light refreshments at 2 PM, followed by the lecture.

There's still room on the bus for a free excursion to see major league soccer's Team Chivas vs. Real Salt Lake matchup at the Home Depot Center in Carson this Saturday, Sept. 29.
The Los Angeles County Parks and Recreation Department is offering a free bus from Farnsworth Park to the game. Bus departs at 5:30 PM and will return at 10:30 PM. Space is limited to the first 56 registrations. One registration handles both bus transportation and admission.

The Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy voted to authorize a grant of $100,000 Monday night to the Arroyos & Foothills Conservancy to complete toward the purchase of 13 acres of Millard Canyon, according to a release from Assemblyman Anthony Portantino.
According to the release, the grant comes after the State Wildlife Conservation Board granted $375,000 in August toward the purchase.
It’s an important piece of the financial puzzle to forever save Millard Canyon,” Portantino said in the release. “It’s a great day for the residents of Altadena and surrounding communities. I am very pleased to have joined my friends at the Arroyos and Foothills Conservancy in advocating for Millard.”
Portantino, who represents the 44th Assemby District, is an advisor to the Arroyo & Foothills Conservancy and previously served as vice chair of the Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy Advisory Board.
“I am very grateful to the Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy for this grant and to Assemblymember Portantino for working with the Arroyos and Foothills Board on crafting the request and being such a tireless advocate for open space preservation in our region,” commented Tim Wendler, President of the Arroyos and Foothills Conservancy Board.
UPDATE 9/26: While the press release from Portantino's office said the purchase was complete, Arroyos & Foothlls Conservancy President Sean Howell says that they are still $66,000 short, and are trying to raise the remaining funds from the local community. The story and headline have been rewritten to reflect this.

Altadena historian Michele Zack (Altadena: Between Wilderness and City) said that she realized the date was approaching when she shared conversations with Monica Hubbard and then-Altadena Town Council chair Dr. Sandra Thomas.
"As the actual date approached, I just felt we should do something -- and Altadena Heritage is celebrating its 25th birthday, so we thought we should do something for the community."
What it is is a celebration at Davies Auditorium at Farnsworth Park on Nov. 3. Zack, a board member of Altadena Heritage, also roped in Jane Brackman, president of the Altadena Historical Society, as well as Hubbard of the Altadena Women's Network, who if she doesn't know every group in town, soon will; and Dolores Hickambottom, a 50-year Altadena resident and former Citizen of the Year, and Sussy Nemer, senior deputy for Supv. Michael D. Antonovich. Los Angeles County offered the auditorium for free, and Antonovich "kicked in some money," Zack said.
What they envision is a truly community-wide celebration, where different individuals or community groups "adopt" a job that needs to be done (decorating, providing refreshments, putting together the commemorative booklet, etc.)

Pegaus Home Health Care is offering flu vaccines at their "Duck the Flu" event next Tuesday at the Almansor Academy in Alhambra.
Danny's Farm will have some petting animals on hand. Cathy Gott of Danny's Farm tells us "we will have cute bunnies to distract the kids and make it easier on the parents of special needs kids.

"Over Due" is a group art show that will take place in the Altadena Main Library community room for the month of October.
The show features work from a Los Angeles artist's collective, including:

The work featured in this show is from a group of artists who formed a collective after graduating from art school in 2010. They felt it was important to keep up the art school atmosphere of pushing each other to continue to create, critique their work, share ideas, go to shows and keep up the conversation of what is current in the art world. Since they first started meeting they have also sought new ways to show their work, going beyond the gallery system to form their own shows and look for any other alternative means of showing their work.

The Arroyo & Foothills Conservancy has received an almost-$21,000 grant from Los Angeles County to plant native trees in the foothills, according to a press release from the organization.
The $20,550.13 grant will enable the Conservancy to begin to reforest lands "hat have been depleted of trees by wind, fire and historic logging," the release said. The Conservancy will plant trees on land it owns in Rubio Canyon, in Millard Canyon, and in Goss Canyon in La Crescenta.
"We're very grateful to the county for this grant," said John Howell, AFC's executive director. "A key part of our mission is to restore native habitat in the foothills, and this is a big step in that direction. We are gratified in particular that Supervisor Michael Antonovich shares our conviction.”
The reforestation won't happen right away. The Conservancy plans to germinate new trees first, from seeds gathered in the foothills to ensure that each new tree is genetically native to the area. Seedlings will be propagated for a year before planting.
AFC consulting biologists homas Juhasz and Mickey Long have determined that 250 bigcone spruce, California sycamore, coast live oak, canyon live oak, California walnut, and bigleaf maple should be planted during the restoration.
While the grant will also fund irrigation and care for the trees, the Conservancy is also looking at installing suitable "companion plants," trying to "recreate habitat as it might have existed prior to major human intervention," Howell said. The California Conservation Corps will plant the trees.

The Altadena Main Library, 600 E. Mariposa St. , will hold an electronics recycling event in their parking lot on Sat., Oct. 20, from 10 AM-2 PM.
Computers, monitors, TVs, cell phones, MP3 players, ink and toner cartridges, printers, microwaves, cables ... all electronics are welcome to be recycled.

Sometimes it’s not what you say, it’s how you say it. Or fail to say it. Over on Crawford Avenue, which lies between the old Scripps property and Lake Avenue, there seems to be a good deal of confusion and concern about what was said to whom by Episcopal Community Services (ECS) and their agent, Riegel Property Management, Inc.
Several years ago, ECS purchased the Scripps property on El Molino and Calaveras with the intention of building MonteCedro, a new retirement community. Scripps already owned some of the houses on the west side of Crawford, and by 2006, ECS had purchased all 14 residences on the west side and rented them out until they would be demolished to make way for villas.
The Scripps Home buildings were demolished, but the Crawford Avenue residences remained intact and occupied. With construction on MonteCedro projected to begin in summer of 2013 and residents to begin moving in the summer of 2015, now is the time for the tenants to pack up, according to Martha Tamburrano, President & CEO of Episcopal Community Services.
The exact timeline for tenants to move out and construction to begin is dependent on sales for the retirement facility reaching 70 percent, Tamburrano said. “The magic number is 130, and we are now at 88. What is heartening is that the numbers of sales have been building each month.”

The Altadena Library is a testbed in a state pilot project to make internet access available to more people through the public libraries.
According to Principal Librarian Pauli Dutton, the Altadena Libraries will be among 40 libraries around the state participating in the California Public Libraries Google Chromebook Pilot Project. "Chromebooks are a new type of computer which is lightweight with built-in security and so speedy they boot up in eight seconds," Dutton writes us. "With a Chromebook you have one-click-access to a world of apps and the web ... You can edit photos, create documents, spreadsheets, presentations and drawings using apps like Google Docs or ZohoWriter. You won’t need a disk to save your work because it all goes on the Cloud retrievable from any computer anytime. Although you can log in as guest, if you use your Google account, the computer will sign you into the services you usually use with access to your bookmarks, settings, and apps. "
The library will receive 15 Chromebooks, with 13 going to the main library and two to the Bob Lucas Branch Library. Checkout begins on Oct. 1. Patrons will need an Altadena Library card, a photo ID, and a signed agreement to use them in the library for up to three hours at a time. Those 14 years of age and older must have the above and in addition their Chrome and Internet agreement must also be signed by a parent or guardian .
The project's intent is to see about creating more internet access points in public libraries on easy-to-use devices that don't require large amounts of staff time. "All we need to do in return is have you try them out and give us your opinion on them," Dutton said. The program will last for one year and will be evaluated for best practices at six months and one year.

The Altadena Ale & Wine House, 2329 N. Fair Oaks, is holding a wine-tasting fundraiser for the Pasadena Rugby Football Club tonight, starting at 5 PM.
Nine whites, reds, and sparkling wine from France, Spain, and Italy will be featured at the wine tasting. Food pairing is included. There will also be a live and silent auction. Admission is $30, and can be purchased at club's website here. All proceeds go to the club.

The Pasadena Master Chorale celebrates "Songs of the World" in a concert that promises to take you "Around the World in 80 minutes."
A cappella arrangements of beloved folk songs from four continents will be featured at the concert, to be held Sun. Sept. 30, at 4 PM at Altadena Community Church, 943 E. Altadena Dr.

The Pasadena Village is a "membership organization connecting people aged 55 and over to resources that enable its members to enjoy safe, healthy and satisfying lives while remaining in their own homes," according to a press release.
The Pasadena Village will officially launch Sun., Sept. 23, with an event at the home of Pasadena Mayor Bill Bogaard and his wife Claire. Keynote speaker will be Susan McWhinney-Morse, a founder of the Beacon Hill Village, the first "village" concept.
"Based on the model first developed by organizers in the Beacon Hill neighborhood of Boston, MA, the Pasadena Village has been tailored to meet the needs of older adults living in the greater Pasadena area. On a volunteer-first basis, members receive free or discounted services from Village volunteers and pre-screened vendors. Partnerships with Huntington Hospital’s Senior Care Network, the Pasadena Senior Center, the City of Pasadena Senior Commission and Episcopal Communities & Services, strengthen the Village and ensure that it does not duplicate services already provided in the city," according to the press release.
The larger mission of the Village concept is to fight social isolation among older adults who are still living in their own homes. “We know that social isolation is one of the most difficult challenges faced by adults who want to remain in their homes as they age,” said Sue Kujawa, executive director of the Pasadena Village. “Our intent is to keep people actively engaged.” Events include movie nights, weekend trips, book clubs and other interest groups. Village members visit local cultural institutions together and frequently enjoy meals and parties at each other’s homes.
There are currently more than 80 established "villages" across the country. Pasadena Village membership currently includes 20 households and 19 individuals. Office and meeting spaces are located at the Flintridge Center, 237 W. Mountain St., Pasadena. Membership applications and volunteer opportunities are available. Thanks to a tip, Altadena sheriff deputies arrested Deon Mejia, 30, of Altadena on charges related to an August burglary.
According to a press release from the Altadena Sheriff Station, deputies responded to a residential burglary call to a home on the 100 block of West Mendocino Street on Aug. 24. The victim, who was home at the time, was alerted to the suspect after hearing the dog bark. A laptop computer was stolen, but the suspect left before deputies arrived.
According to the release from Lt. Michael White, Altadena detectives acted on a tip identifying Mejia, was was arrested for residential burglary on Sept. 18.

It was an exciting day in Altadena and vicinity as Space Shuttle Endeavour was ready for its close-up this morning. Endeavour took a final bow, flying over points in Northern and Southern California before landing at LAX to be prepared for its future as a California Science Center exhibit. It swept the local area starting at about 11:30 this morning, and by the look of pictures and videos we've received, it didn't disappoint. More pictures after the jump.
